"New" needle valve doesn't fit Black Widow??? 20240212
I have a Black Widow with a metal backplate, double slit cylinder; no history on it as I picked it up with a bunch of other stuff.

I am "rebuilding" as it had a dried fuel pickup, missing gaskets and the needle was bent.

I picked up a pair of "used" cox needle valves from an eBay seller (aerohusker). No complaints there. However, the "new/used" needle valve only goes in about 8 turns while the old, bent one goes in about 12 turns. I noticed because I usually blow on the pickup fuel line to see if the needle will cut off when fully screwed it. In the case of the "new" one, it doesn't.  Pic shows "new" vs the old bent one along with the BW backplate. They actually look the same...
BTW, the 2nd "new" needle valve fits properly in a Babe Bee that also needed one. I did swap them, same results

Was there a difference in needle valves for a Black Widow???

Thanks,
Bill

Good day, Bill. As far as I know, the same needle valve is used for all the reed valve metal backplates from the Babe Bee on up, I believe for the plastic backplates for the integral tanked "bee" series engines as well. What may be happening is the threads in the backplate may be slightly distorted from the bent needle valve being used in it. Have you tried lubing the threads and carefully threading the new needle valve in and out several times to see if you can improve the fit? Maybe someone here has a better idea?

If you don't have Berryman's parts cleaner (best option) soak both the needle and the backplate in 91% alcohol overnight and scrub with a toothbrush. Add a drop of Marvel Mystery Oil during assembly.

Thanks guys. After many tries with both needles, and even a 3rd (bent) one. The "new" one is working and seating properly. I don't know if the upper threads were tight on the new needle or there was some buildup in the bottom of the threads on the backplate that the old ones eventually cleared out but it seems fine now.
