.051 connecting rods.
.051 connecting rods.
Fellers,
I went through an .051 this weekend and I noticed that the rod had an oil hole on the big end. I have seen this on the .09 and .15's but, never the smaller TD's. This is an early engine (no milled fins) is this normal?
If this has been covered before sorry for the repeat.
Ron

Re: .051 connecting rods.
i have noticed this before with one of my .051's, Im not an expert but maybe it is so that oil can lubricate the inside of the connecting rod where it attaches to the crankshaft for smoother running with less friction

Thanks Mitch, that is surely what it was designed for. I was just wondering if this was done on early .049/.051's only. I have dissassembled some later ones and don't recall seeing the hole. I may have just missed it though.

Mud,
I was hoping you would reply, thank you. I have only broke down a few .049's and .051's and had never seen one before. This engine was given to me by a guy that had a bunch of older stuff. I wouldn't doubt this .051 is an early issue. The TD .020 he gave me had the black NV but, it had a stepped cylinder and the Pee Wee he gave me had a straight cylinder no "Cox" on the backplate and no venturi screen.
The .051 appears to be almost new so I am happy. Thanks again.
Ron

Did any of those .051 rods of yours have the hole John? I am pretty sure the .051 wannabe didn't.

Re: .051 connecting rods.
I've looked at 3 of each Ron as well as the 'doubtful' 04519.. from the 60's, 70's, pre venturi screen and post.
None this end, although the indent on the bottom of the rod does vary a lot to the point of almost encouragining
taking a drill to it.

Re: .051 connecting rods.
i took apart another cox engine last night, my golden bee. My golden bee is not stock, it has a cylinder/piston combo that does not have spi, i also found that the con rod on the piston in my gb also has a hole drilled in the bottom
