Re: pics of medallions
There are/were RC conversion kits offered for the medallions, these came in a complete complete do-it-yourself kit with muffler, rotating spraybar and linkage. The muffler makes them a little more quiet, but mainly at reduced throttle. You can also use the head from a QB to get a regular glow plug, with lower power and idle.

Re: pics of medallions
why does everyone castrate their TD09s like that?
sure, they are loud, but doing that to a TD, that's just unethical...

Re: pics of medallions
The TD 09 came in RC versions from the factory. It doesn't really reduce the power that much as the muffler is not very restrictive and the full throttle performance is close to the regular TD 09. The same is true for the TD .05RC.
The only really odd thing I've seen is intake chokes on sure-starts....

Re: pics of medallions
The advantage of mufflers is not only the sound but also the fact that they redirect the exhaust output. With a little care the only thing that sees oil is one side of the elevator. Below is an after-flight image with the 05RC, now compare that to the front end you'll usually get from a cox engine and you might see what I'm after...

Re: pics of medallions
Kris I really like that plane.
Who was the company that makes a kit for it again? I would love to build one some day and do have a couple of norvels not doing anything.

Re: pics of medallions
It is a Yellow Jacket from Morris Hobbies. The kit had very few ready-cut parts (die-cut fuselage and tail surfaces only) so one could easily build it straight from the drawing. The drawing should still be available but I cannot find the link right now.

Re: pics of medallions
If you do built it I made a few changes that might interest you;
i) I reduced the tail surfaces as they looked a bit large to me.
ii) reduced wing incidence. The drawing calls for about 2°, but that makes it balloon with speed, about 0.8° is enough and 0° may work too.
iii) I added about 2-3° degrees engine downthrust (the drawing called for 0°) to counteract the ballooning at speed.
With these changes I can fly it at full throttle with a Norvel .061 (spinning a 5x4 at about 20500rpm) with only a very little climb and it makes for some great large loops and long sweeping turns (no rudder needed). Great fun but it gets small very quickly, don't blink!

Yep, the pics I showed are untouched factory engines...The TD .09 in fact, has never been started.
