Both items in the drawing are D bits and they are used as both drills and reamers. They are lathe tools and don't need much of a cutting edge.

For aluminium you probably would not need to harden and temper the bit.

Here is a DIY creation



And a more professional creation



The reamer with the two points - I have several versions of this is used to bore venturis following a small pilot hole. The other opens up a crankcase again following a pilot hole.

Yes, everything seems to be on youtube these days, but it doesn't mean that it is any good. Seems like he made it the wrong way around for a regular turning lathe... lol!

When he was using it the lathe was running in reverse. Not something I would recommend as on my lathes the chuck is screwed on and could easily loosen.
