Re: S1 Ringmaster
I am waiting on hinges I have the strong paper ones but they always come back to flat when tension is gone so I will use the plastic Dubro ones.
Thanks Ken no wooden horn.

Re: S1 Ringmaster
Just a heads up when one uses pin hinges such as Dubro's offerings. You must individually check each hinge by moving it and insure that there's no clicking. Flash forms on the barrel which causes the hinge to momentarily bind for a second. One needs to trim all flash off of both side of the hinge barrels with a sharp #11 blade. Once that part is done, I use a carbide file and I totally rough up the entire hinge leaf on all four sides. The rougher the better. I even go as far to drill additional holes in the leafs. At this point, I use a fairly viscous oil which I apply with a Q-tip. It usually wicks immediately into the barrel. It does however get onto the barrels and leafs. I then use acetone and a acid brush to clean the leafs thoroughly and put them aside until use. The oil will remain in the barrels thus not allowing the epoxy to get into them and hinder there movement.
Once the hinge slots are cut and test fitted, insure that all leafs are parallel and inline. I made a tool with a dowel and 1/64" ply which looks like a tiny spatula. This fits the hinge slots perfectly. I mix up 30 min epoxy and apply the epoxy into the slots with the spatula tool. DON"T glue the hinge and slide it in, this will force epoxy into the barrels. Once the epoxy is in the slots, take a heat gun and heat the epoxy aiming it at the elevator slots. This will thin the epoxy which will soak into the wood further. Apply a bit more epoxy with the spatula and clean any residual epoxy off of the outside of the elevator. Don't install the elevator to the stab or vice versa. DO ONE SIDE at a time. You can take a straight edge on the bench and lay all the hinge leafs flat and insure all of them are at right angles and are sticking out the same amount. This is critical to a bind free installation. I've gone as far as to remove the pin and use a long piece of music wire slipped through all of them to align properly. I do this with flaps usually. Once dry, insure movement is okay and proceed to installing into the other side.

Thanks for the tips. I always have problems with installing them. I use a thicker balsa for the tail sections I usually glue a piece of 1/16 to the balsa that the kit came with. I never invested in the tool Dubro has for making slits

Re: S1 Ringmaster
Is your intent to leave that Perfect bellcrank in there with stranded wire? That can lead to a immediate failure. Having the infill between the center ribs though is extremely important and it's good to see that practice being put to place. In addition, I would highly recommend a additional ply platform up on top to support the bellcrank bolt. I'm well aware of the fact that thousands were built like this. Single bellcrank platforms are somewhat discouraged. In time, this can fail pull testing and it really is just a matter of when it decides to let go. It only takes the plane once to get loose across the circle while your holding the handle. The jerk will debone the entire inboard wing panel if it lets go. You just don't see enough Buster's. They're actually in my opinion the best of the bunch. Most choose the others for racing due to the sleeker wing. I found the Buster to be equally as fast. My flying partner had a Brodak POS version which flew well but it wasn't the same. It met it's demise when flying three up one day and he didn't pass the other flyer properly and got into a line tangle. The new design obliterated itself at 5' off of the ground. It doesn't say much for the durability of the new design. A original Goldberg kit is pretty much like a tank.

Re: S1 Ringmaster
I don’t like the ideal of the wire rubbing on the bellcrank either or should I say sawing but I don’t have another, but I will look for one on eBay thanks. And as far as another platform above it are you suggesting a floating bellcrank?
I think the buster is so much like the shoestring
Can you refer me to a good bellcrank please?
I added some bracing between the spars

Brodak has the nylon ones but I don’t feel like spending shipping fees. I have some eyelets maybe I could use as a bushing

Re: S1 Ringmaster
Sig and Brodak are what I prefer for stranded lines. For strength, I use the old Fox aluminum bellcranks. I can't use the nylon on some of my planes because they flex too much. Sig bellcranks used to be 100% bulletproof. The last few I've been using flex quite badly when I've pull tested them. My Nemesis for example was going to get one of my Fox MK Combat Specials, that was until I did a pull test on it. I used a .Fox .36X because I didn't want to run into problems. I have Sig bellcranks from the 80's which are noticeably stronger then the current versions I have. Sig bellcranks are good but large and can take up a bit more room over the Brodak. Both Sig and Brodak offer terrific results though.

Re: S1 Ringmaster
MBS Model Supply offers a lot more wire for a lot less. Melvin is a stand up guy and you can buy a lot of eyelets, crimps and large spools of wire for a lot less then Brodak. Brodak also sells Sig bellcranks and Sig still shows them in stock. I don't know how you purchase from Brodak. Generally the shipping on the website is more compared to calling them and placing a order.

Re: S1 Ringmaster
For drill rod and music wire I buy these assortments.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/165030431017
Handy sizes for lead-out wire and landing gear. Price has increased since my last purchase. But, I miss my local hobby shops. I used to go in and buy the diameter that I needed in 3 foot lengths without having to buy some I would never use.

Re: S1 Ringmaster
That one has similar proportions to the Sterling Ringmaster S1, but has a constant chord wing and fairing for boxer style engine on the real aircraft.
Could it be a Buster instead? Oops, spoke too soon, your link indicates it as a Whitman Buster.

Re: S1 Ringmaster
Yes it was a weird kit by CG could have been either or Shoestring or Buster. The elevator and tail are the same as the SS. I see on the real Buster the elevator and tail were tiny
But it sure was fast
I pretty please so far with the build but it sure didn’t go off without a hitch. I poked 3 holes in the wing so far and it’s still not complete. I’m getting old lol

You ran with what colors you had on hand, red with white trim looks sharp and appropriate.
A little trivia, was revealed here in CEF. I didn't know that CG's little half-A Jumpin' Bean was Carl's downsized Shoestring.
