http://sceptreflight.net/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Anderson%20Royal%20Baby%20Spitfire.html

Today and yesterday were real good (except for pollen) for some long pending engine testing. I got this Royal Spitfire .049 on Ebay about two years ago and just never could find a "round to it" until today. I had come a bit nasty on outside and slightly gummy and I got it cleaned up w/o a full disassembly and oiled shortly after I got it. Forensic exam suggested little run time and the baby blue cylinder muff is real nice. Original working Spitfire plug too. No tank, just a backplate came with it.

I was astonished at how easy it was to fire it up. No clogged spraybar, and on some old 20% nitro it pretty much ran like the engine review said it would. On a Cox 6-3 black nylon square tip it just sort of poked along real steady at maybe 10K like an .020 diesel turning the same prop. Lowest decibel un muffled 1/2A engine I've ever heard. Now with an old style Cox round tip 5-4 prop (from an old Cox Baby Bee Super Cub 105 C/L model ??) the unit really came to life and probably hit 14 to 14.5K. Very nice engine.

Although the Sceptre flight article says otherwise, I'm pretty sure the .049 is simply known as the "Spitfire", the .045 Baby Spitfire is a different beast and the "Royal Spitfire" is an .065, which has beam mounts.

H'mm, I found the confusion. When introduced in the Sept 1952 and Oct 1952 MAN, this engine was "the Royal Baby Spitfire".

But then in the July 1955 MAN, it became the "new .049 Spitfire". Not sure why it was new or what happened between 1952 and 1955.

Maybe Queen Elizabeth II sent her Royal Messenger to Southern California for a little talk with Sir Mel about "cultural appropriation".
