Starter springs and Throttle rings Empty Starter springs and Throttle rings

Post  Cribbs74 Fri Jan 20, 2012 3:05 pm

Received all my parts from Matt,Bernie and John Goddard so I can build my Texaco engine. Problem is I cannot install the no drag starter spring under the throttle ring. When I tighten the cylinder down, the throttle ring hits the spring and won't allow the throttle ring to rotate.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so what was the fix?

I am thinking about grinding down the spring wire to reduce the diameter allowing it to fit under the throttle ring.

Yes unless you want to wait for others opinions as they may have some suggestions.

Some mufflers come with a spacer that one can put below the cylinder. There are also timing shims that one can use to raise the cylinder a little. Grinding the spring works too...

Ok, grinding works well. Just skimmed a little off the diameter of the wire. Works good and is not even noticeable. Thanks guys!

Had the same experience but rather than thinning the spring I decided to grind the bottom of the throttle drum...a few runs on a fine sandpaper flattened on the table did the right job.

I guess it could work both ways, I just figured the spring was cheaper.

Yeah if you messed up the spring an new one is cheap but the ring would cost more.

Why not just leave the starter spring off?

It was a thought. I run my Tee Dee's that way. I never used to use starter springs but, since I started I find the engines fire off much quicker and usually run in the right direction.

Since this is a really cool titled thread, thought i would put this here.

Did cox or estes cox or ? make a left hand no drag starter spring for a 049.

Just the spring, to be used with a round drive washer, no plastic hex driver piece.

We typically grind them down if a customer requests it to work with a starter spring!

So basically for a Left hand no drag spring. Take a #334 kit, toss the plastic drive hex piece, twist and hammer the spring until you get it where you want it.

yes? no?
