Has anyone made throttle rings using store products and hand tools?

I know .049 ones are plentiful and I do have a few of those.

.010,.020,.09 and .15 ones are not so easy to find. I don't think they even made one for a .010.

So I was thinking it could br done with some bar stock and common tools. The .15 may be tricky due to the diameter of the cylinder.

Just wondering if anyone has gone down this road and if they were sucessful.

Yes Using brass tubing and a hack saw with circlip and JB weld.
But that does not work for "stepped" cylinders like the .010 you need a 2 piece or extendable one this is what me and mostly Jared were sorta working on.

Indra,

Is that brass tubing of the correct diameter? Or do you split it with the hacksaw and then JB the snap ring on?

correct diameter for the ones it fits over but for the stepped cylinders it must be splits.
But it is very important that you get the a good fit or idle will not be satisfying.

Gotcha! Off to the hardware store then......

The hacksaw is to cut a groove for the snap ring I presume?

I usually JB weld it in place otherwise it rotates.

I guess that depends if they are easy to build and proffessional enough looking. If I had a lathe then it would be easier to make some real nice ones.

If they turn out Matt I will make you a couple for free. I am about to move, buy a house etc. So it may be a while.

I looked into doing it for an 09 before and it was around $100 for tooling and like $50 for a 6 ft piece of material.

Guys its not that simple

is the description from a youtube vid and is not my words

These rings must be custom fit to each cylinder, and fit very close to do their job properly. I had to make, and buy, special tooling to accomplish this task. It's just not worth it if you're only going to do a few engines. Not all of the rings will make an engine stall, but most of them will idle less than 5500 rpm.

VERY CLOSE FIT in fact cox precision ground each one I dont have any nearby nor do i have my measuring instruments

Thats off, I have made about 6 of them
From brass I got from the LHS and online.
It is a tight fit at frost but as the engine warms up so does the brass.

Not enough demand and I would be hand making each part which would be labor intensive. They are really not too hard to make, just have to figure out if they will fit a cylinder Cox ground or a regular one with the black oxide.

I tried the tubing and they did not work very well. The fit was too loose and the low idle was not very good. I used C&H brass tubing that was at the local hardware store. I think if they were split and then soldered to size they would work better.

Just my tuppence worth...

Based on my recent fun and games I think rudimentary is a very kind adjective for this type of throttle.
However
In my quest for 'Johnnie making the mistakes so you don't have to'.....
Now I know I've got a spare 15 cylinder I'm gonna fire up up the medallion 15 RC to see whether it 'throttles' any better than my 049 medallion did.
Frankly it can't be worse and my neighbours were mostly at work yesterday so they need a proper 'treat' this weekend.
lol!

P.S.
Is brass the ideal material to use?

A good coxaholic would time the initial fire up in conjuction with the neighbors alarm clock, for the best effect.............

Let us know, my guess it will throttle the same as the smaller guys.

Here's another approach that has been used by several from RCU when that group was very active. It requires little machining and materials are readily available.
