I notice that the "basic" Surestart engines w/o tank seem to go very reasonably price-wise, and there are a number of them available "new" it seems.
Are these solid enough to snag a few up for less "white knuckled" projects?

They are of decent quality and yes they are affordable. Not much in the way of collector value but, they get the job done! If you just want a couple engines to make some 1/2A planes then they are certainly good for that.
