My Uncle let me borrow an old book titled, "The Complete Book of Model Aircraft Spacecraft and Rockets" by Louis Hertz...copyright 1967.

It's got a lot of cool stuff (in my opinion), and I keep finding little factoids that perhaps many here have long-known.

One of the interesting notes concerned the reasoning for the scale (1/72) used for the plastic models so many of us glued together as kids:

Awhile back I asked the question on another thread of how the smaller scale sizes were measured and determined, and never got a real clear cut answer,,until now,,as per 1967.

Love the old dusty, moldy nostalgia books. Interesting thinking back in the day.

That's very cool!

As the years roll by, it seems the dumber I get. In a few more, I suppose I'll be a raving idiot.

My reference for scaling was always prop and firewall area.......scale by the prop size and relative firewall dimensions for a decent flying model. Shocked

Kim:

WOW! Hi-flier kites! How well I remember saving my paper route money to buy them. Then my pals and I began to built our own kites from scratch splitting cedar strips to use as the frames.

Eventually we progressed to building MONSTER kites then came model airplanes.

It was a magical time to be a kid in post-WWII America. We entertained ourselves using our imaginations. (What A concept!) Thanks for the memories!

Hey Dave,

You're welcome! There's a bunch of cool stuff in this book that I'm gradually cycling through the scanner.

Yes, I agree, and still believe, that there's no video program/game that can come close to the great things that happen in an imaginative mind.

Any kite that's got drawings of Gee Bee's and autogyro's just HAS to be cool !!!!

Kim:

A childhood is too fleeting a moment to be wasted on trivial pursuilts like video games and the like. It's a time to develop creative pursuits which can become lifetime passions.

As a kid I learned to fish, hunt, camp, hike, and yes, build models all of which remain favorite activities in my "sunset" years especially when I enjoy them with my five grandchildren. Not every grandpa can claimed that but I consider it my highest priviledge to be with them as they grow and mature. Fortunately they all live within and hour's drive from our home.

Got to searching and discovered that I have a promotional kite that may have been made by High Flyer. There's no Manf. Logo though. It's advertising an insurance company here in Missouri.

Pops bought me a paper Shucks auto parts kite back in the day and I remember it being about 5-6 feet across on the cross stick. The thing was huge.

I have a double handle 30' tail dragon kite I take down to the oregon coast on occasion.

You guys crack me up!!! We could probably find two or more folks on this forum that have a common interest, besides small engines, in almost any subject. If it flys, floats, rolls, shoots or goes fast, there will be more than one person that owns it, does it or likes it.

Andrew:

The "interesting" folks on this forum have lots of "interesting" activities" that pop up from time to time.

That's another thing that makes CECF great! I haven't read of anyone yet that would be considered boring. Laughing
