A Walter Musciano Cox Space Bug Jr. combo
I couldn't pass this one up.
I thought the model looked familiar but what caught my eye was the yellow tanked Space Bug Jr, my first ever store bought Cox engine albeit in red.
A Muscianio Super Sabre hollow log. Never built one and only seen in Scientifics brochures and ads. Poorly built and painted in Navy colors it will be stripped and painted in Air Force silver. Found the plans on Outerzone which will aid in reconstructing the elevator. Ol' Walt and Scientific sure turned out a lot of these. I would love to find replacements for the ones I have built in the past.

In looking at the plans, I don't see how in the world a Cub .049 could suck the fuel way out of the ass end of this model.

I could be mistaken, it may not be a Musciano design. Walt never would place a tank like that and his name doesn't appear on the plan.
Looks more like a F7U Cutlass than a Super Sabre too, but I will reconstruct the engine cowl giving it a more scale like look.

I wonder if a Cox .020 would pull this around if I rebuild it as light as possible? Thinking a remote tank Sky Copter engine with a proper propeller rather than a Pee Wee.
It would allow me to better configure the cowl for a more scale-like look. Sitting perhaps at 90 degrees.

What does it currently weigh sans engine?

Bob, I feel it would fly it. Most of Walt's designs were based on engines that most modelers had on hand that were generally inexpensive. When we do the hollow logs, we use 2 pieces of 5/8" and hollow it out paper thin. Our finishes are generally colored tissue applied with thinned white glue and a few coats of dope over it. No paint on the models.

Re: A Walter Musciano Cox Space Bug Jr. combo
Thanks guys,
I will know more about it when it arrives in a couple of days, but I would think that it's quite heavy with gobs of paint/dope lathered on. All that will come off.
If I can remove the wing without substantial damage my intent is to continue hollowing out the fuselage as much as possible and snuggle up a small fuel tank to the firewall. I have spare .020's but have never flown an airplane with one. I imagine short lines would be necessary.
After successfully (sorta) flying that plastic Cox Corsair without getting falling down dizzy I'm anxious to try another. Flew it with just 19' lines. Baby steps....

Ken has the right idea. I would go with a tanked Pee Wee .020 however. There are just too many things that could go wrong with a less than Perfect tank buried in the log with just a plastic Pee Wee trying to suck fuel. You don't need a five minute dizzy spell either.

Ok Ok...……….I got it the first time. So your saying, go with a tanked Pee Wee?
And ya, CEF is loading slow this morning leading to double taps.....

Re: A Walter Musciano Cox Space Bug Jr. combo
Bob,
Is there any chance a Magic-Pilot can help you? Sterling proposed two-line pole flying on their DC-3, and PT-19. The control system remains set up the same, but the handle is a bearing-supported jig on the top of a 4 or 5 foot pole. The "handle" spins with the plane, and as the plane drips below the handle, up is applied. As the plane drifts above the handle, down is applied.
The pole can be as simple as a round post sunk in a bucket full of concrete. Heavier models may require a couple of guy wires and tent pegs holding the bucket firmly to the ground.
Meanwhile, you get to stand outside the circle and watch, all while standing still.

I could get into that. A lawn chair, a cooler of beer and a 22LR semi auto pistol for ground to air gunnery practice.

Cool Yellow SB jr. That design you show is Walt's from the Outer Zone https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=3573 Thats an interesting way Ken describes to make the Hollow log

Bob's is the Super Sabre and your link is for the Lil' Sabre-- two similar planes, but different.

There is a little Sabre
https://freercplans.com/plan-little-sabre-5686.htm
but this isn't it.
Easy to confuse as Scientific put out a bunch of different models..
It looks so similar to the Cutlass that I could just put a couple of fins on the wing and call it one.
Someday I'm going to sit down and check off all those that I have built, it would be many. Wish I had bought them all at the time.
I thought about pylon flying but it would take the fun out of it. No loops, no inverted, no wing-overs...……...no crashing and dizzies...

With my eyes Victor it would be the 12 gage with 7 1/2.

I can just see you falling over backwards in your lawn chair after taking a shot.

BwahHahhaa! My side is splitting because I'm laughing so hard.
Bob, we can rig a Traverse and Elevation mechanism (tri-pod or pedistal mount) for the shotgun. I know it works for M2 Browning .50 Cal's!

Our club has a pylon pole setup. I can't say I'm 100% sold on the idea. It does fly the model but not the same as being out in the circle. Here's Dan using it with out club trainer which is a .19 size plane.

Here's a video of the mechanism, the triangular part that the lines connect to has been redone as we all agreed the geometry wasn't quite correct and the throws were mushing out. We haven't had it out this summer but maybe in the fall.

That's pretty nifty Ken. Mark Boesen posted a picture of a similar arraignment on the Cox Powered Tether pole thread.
No more dizzies and you get to sit/lay down.
