 Wire Leadouts Empty Wire Leadouts

A thought......rather than trying to source unobtainable components in this hobby/hardware store wasteland where I live ,why not pre-made wire fishing leaders for leadouts?  Fishing stuff I can do!

OhBee,

Use whatever you have on hand...I think I mentioned that I used picture-hanging wire since it was locally available. Optimum? Nope! But certainly effective for my kids' first planes (Roundie-Roundie).

Also note the Wido Master uses stiff wire, not anything special. That wire was chosen because it was on hand, and I needed to "stoke the fire" while my two boys were paying attention.

Neither of those choices will be on my later more aggressive fliers.

As your building and flying improves, then your materials selection can also. But until then, even a plank flying wing can be made from scrap materials so you can evaluate just how much you can/want to do. If you continue in the hobby, then you can plan and purchase higher grade stuff meeting the two needs of light weight and strong enough. I've done a fair job of scavenging and trading with others over the last few years.

Remember, this IS supposed to be fun!

I have been using downrigger line that I got on a used downrigger from a garage sale for $2. It is .030" stainless steel braided wire. Good for bigger stuff than 1/2A. I just crimp short pieces of tubing over for the length I need. I can still use it as a downrigger if I ever get a boat. For 1/2A stuff I use .018" flying wire leadouts. Pushrods - for thin stuff I use .035" MIG wire. Stiffer aluminum pushrods like for F2D combat, U can use TIG aluminum rods.

Thats what I use. I have bulk spools of coated stainless steel leader material and associated crimp sleeves in different sizes. I use these for both leaders and quick-strike rig making. No problems here at all.

No crimp sleeves...no crimp tool....thats why I was thinking pre-made leaders. I couldn't even find a spool of fishing wire under 60# test!
