Gilbert Exhaust Stacks

Over the years I’ve seen a couple of comments and questions about A.C. Gilbert engines and why one exhaust stack is longer than other. As I was cleaning up a few days ago, I pulled out a box that I got (I think) from a swap meet a few years ago. It has one complete, and another mostly complete, Gilbert control line plane. I figured I take a quick picture to explain why the right stack (not really mufflers) is longer than the left. The engine points to the right to maintain line tension. So, to have the spinner centered in the fuselage with the engine pointing right, it is offset to the left of the fuselage. This requires the right stack to be longer to clear the fuselage equally with the left stack.

Yep, that's exactly the case, although there are many out there who just don't get it. On a number of occasions I have come across these engine (of which I have many) for sale with the stacks incorrectly fitted. I have seen both examples, with either two left or two right stacks fitted to the engine. In a couple of examples, I have tried to question the seller about whether they happen to have the correct matching stack, to which I often get an agressive response, disputing my "theory" about the exhausts. I have gone ahead and purchased a couple of incorrect examples. You catch up in the end. Thumbs Up

Elevens and sevens. Pictured as found. Marks airplane mounted example looks like a seven? But my two shows stacks of the same size, only different on the 11. I have a few more squirreled away somewhere with spare parts, heads mostly.

We did a couple of threads on these years ago. Anyone got a video of one of theirs running?

Both the 7 & the 11 use the off-set stacks. The 7s did come out with a small "muffler arrangement, which had no pipe, more like a tongue muffler. Both were the same both sides and were used on the "Wing Thing", where no off-set was required.
