Cox Tee Dee to Medallion conversion Empty Cox Tee Dee to Medallion conversion

Post  Aeromister Sun Apr 17, 2022 8:45 am

I picked up a bunch of .051 Tee Dee parts that I would like to use to build a good running engine. I have always found the Tee Dee's to be tempermental. I have read that the Medallions were easier to start and while they didn't have the power of a Tee Dee, they were good sport engines. Is it possible to convert a .051 Tee Dee with the #5 cylinder to a Medallion engine by changing the crankshaft or do you have to change the cylinder also? Also, does anyone know where I can find a Medallion crankshaft?

Thanks

You already aware of most of the differences. Theoretically, no your not going to make a Tee Dee a Medallion. However, you can detune the TD and make it more like the Medallion. Even using your #5 cylinder, you add head gaskets 5-6 of them. Switch the high comp head to a stock 325 head. You could also choke down the venturi. Seeing that the venturi of the TD is bell mouthed, I have put bushings which have a small I.D. that slip into the venturi but not into enough to block the peripheral jets. I then encapsulate the bushing with surgical tubing stretched over the outside of the venturi. Now, you could also switch the TD carb body to a Medallion carb body which will assist in fuel draw but will require more parts that are becoming difficult to source. In addition, dropping the nitro can also detune the engine.

Thanks for the advice. I have always like the Tee Dee, I just wish they were a little more user friendly. I will try the mods.

You don't need to change cylinders or crank to try this out. Swap the TD intake for the Medallion and try it.

Thanks for the idea,

I thought about using a Medallion intake but the Medallion intakes are pretty rare these days (as are the cranks). I have a bunch of different cylinders with matched pistons as well as heads. I need to a few small parts and then I think I will try a few different combinations to see if I can get a winning setup. I am planning on scratch building a S-Tee so I don't really need a lot of performance. I just don't want to fight that hand launch hesitation that I have had with Tee Dee's in the past.

My own Medallion/TD project. It has a TD .15 Mark III cylinder, piston and crank. The rest is Medallion. I put it together for a pusher tether car project that is stalled. Haven't got to run it yet.
