Old Ads...Article from January/February 1963 American Modeler

Relative to percent of income my memory was in 1960 my dad struggled on a Army Captains salary to justify the cost of some so called high end things that cost a steep $6.99. He bought McCoy engines cuz Fox or Enya were too expensive

Thanks that Safeway gave 5 cents a pop bottle, my brothers and I collected all weekend to buy a $3.95 .049 at the pharmacy on Grand aveneue Oakland California in 1964. My mom insisted ALL my paper route $$ went to my college fund. Turning in pop bottles and mowing yards kept me in props, glue, and glow fuel

Seemed pretty close to topic to me. One of the off-shoots of these old ads (at least for me) is to give some prospective as to the perceived "bargains" to be had back in the day.

While those little Scientific "Hollow Logs" were reachable, they were still a challenge for a kid operating on a push-mower / pop bottle deposit budget !!!!

A couple of post up is a Great Lakes Battery Co Hot Shot power pack I would dearly love to own right now! no matter how many pop bottles I have to collect!

I remember the .5c bottles. I collected many of those old bottles when I was a kid. I remember collecting bottles for a couple of months and mowing a few lawns so I could go to Woolworths and get a Testors .049 powered Widow Maker Dodge Challenger Funny Car for like $8.00! I had a ball with that car. I wish I still had that car. I also sold greeting cards from the ad's in the back of a comic book and getting a COX Miss America Mustang. Man those were the days!!

I recently hit the proverbial jackpot of old airplane mag's from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's and some of them have COX engine reviews such as the Tee Dee .049 and the .010 etc... I'll try and post them soon. I have about 20 mag's and will be getting a lot more here in the next few weeks.

Looked right at it and missed it ! Yeah, that puppy turns "the other way" !

Nope guy's he is just holding it inverted, look at the engine and imagine the plane flipped the rigt way. Leadouts point in and engine points out.

Well...OK, but unless he put a canopy on the top AND the bottom, we're looking at the top, which puts the leadouts on the right wing...but whatever is cool!

Kim, I really wish that magazine had stayed with us. No magazine that I know of did so much for the modelling community. Truly amazing the knowledge that was passed on and the people who designed the models. What always surprised me was the additional adds for hobbyists to explore the field of aviation and mechanics. My good friend went on to join the Navy and later to become airframe mechanic. The magazine probably had a lot of influence on his career decision. Yesterday I was able to go through many of my mags and indeed I found the article on the F-82 that uses 9 Babe Bees.

The plane was designed by Terry Aldrich and is in American Modeller April 1967. Terry also designed a twin .35 size that used Mccoy .35's. Unfortunately, the 9 Babe Bee F-82 doesn't have plans which actually surprised me. The wingspan is 82" and the fuse length is 44". Having built a Brodak twin F-82, I can only imagine how much power 9 of them would have. Certainly the weight of that model and the power is going to be a handful. The article stated it flew well enough for landing with two and in some cases just one. Ken

For sure..all of the magazines of that era, and this one in particular, seemed to be chocked full of ideas and experiments. Seems like EVERYONE was designing something and throwing it out there for others to ponder.

I'm a particular fan of "Junk Box Engineering" (as if that's not already obvious), and the Hint and Tips articles are always some of my favorites.

I think this has to be the reason for the wild popularity of forums like this one, where the same type of thinking goes on.
