Look at what I saw at our state fair! A 4H kid entered it and won a red award. Sorry about the picture quality, I took the picture from a distance and zoomed in on the plane. Yours could win that award, it looks good!

We've got a red full-scale Staggerwing based at my airport. If any of the members would want some detail photos...I'll try to take a batch the next time it's owner has it out on the ramp.

I'd like to see that. I found some photos on line. I needed to verify which wing the numbers went on. Sig has it backwards.

A friend of my great aunt had one that I flew in as a little kid. I still remember taxing in a series of s-turns, the big comfortable seats, the roll-down windows and of course the sound of that engine firing up.

It is third or forth on my list of favs - first two being the two planes my dad owned - a Ryan PT22 and an Ercoupe (first plane I flew in) followed by the Beech an a Cessna 195.

My rememerances flow back to my first plane ride in Ryan ST at a local airport now a shopping center. I have picture me sitting in the passenger seat wearing the then typical leather flying helmet. The Ryan was owned by one of my Dad's friends and he flew me around our area for nearly a hour during which we flew near Mount Rainier for a most memorable view.

This ocurred shortly after WWII when av gas became more readilly available. The Ryan and the experience etched an image in my mind that remains with me today.

One of the things on my to do list is scan the photos of my dad standing next to his. You can read the words "Flying Service" that are etched into the aluminum on the fuselage from the removed lettering that betrays the previous owners use as a crop duster. He is wearing said helmet. The Kinner turns about 1800 RPM as I recall, with a distinctive pop-pop to the exhaust out the top cylinder, with the other four into a common exhaust that exits below.

Seems strange to see a "Stag-Beech" done of with German crosses but I like the effect.

That is true but the Maltese cross just adds something to red planes.
I put them on my Stiks and its on the DR.1 so it must be cool Cool

Good deal!

I'll keep an eye for the next time it gets rolled out, and get some really good photos. I REALLY ought to have photos if it already and the other classics we have based here...and am slowly getting there. I finally set up a Photo Bucket account, and will dump them there also.

Later !

At my age, before I attempt control-line flying again, I'd better go out on our lawn and try spinning in CCW in circles. This, of course, after dark lest our neighbors think I've lost my mind. (Which well might be correct!) lol!

If historic aircraft appeal to you we have two wonderful ones here in the PNW: the Muesum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle and the Evergreen Flight Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.

Both have sensational displays that will entral ANY aviation buff: the SR-71 "Blackbird" or a Ford Tri-motor in Seattle and Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" in McMinnville. Displays of WWI & WWII "Warbirds" are featured at both.

Both have web sites that worth visiting prior to going there

Built a CL staggerwing years ago and had a issue with it on the first flight. Motor layed over when my buddy released it,,then the motor caught after 1/2 circle of surging rpms and it went to full sing,,right over my head with slack lines and a death dive into the asphalt. I did the walk of shame and went over and picked up the pieces and took it home and glued it back together. That biplane wing setup is touchy,,ALOT of lift there.

I spent some time building that thing. Hole sawed the cowling and assembled the cylinder back onto the motor thru that hole. Filled all the wing and elevator roots, sanded and filled and painted nice.
