Some 1/2a Time Today Empty Some 1/2a Time Today

Post  microflitedude Sun Apr 01, 2012 10:11 pm

The PeeWee yesterday refused to go, the glow plug kept fouling with fuel. So today I though I would test my Cub with the new tank.

The receiver decided to fail as I got everything ready to go - spent 10 minutes pulling it out, checking all the servos, and rebinding RX. The good old Black Widow started right up. Smile I ran it with the muffler almost closed, about a 1/4" opening. I drove it around the backyard, until the prop hit a stick. Very Happy I then held it in a few flying positions while running - it did seem to slow down a little bit. After setting it down, it quit. Not sure why, as there was still fuel in the tank line. Wouldn't start back up. It got very hot, to where drops of fuel would immediately boil off the head. (no airflow cooling I suppose)

It runs at about 3 to 3 and 1/2 turns out on the needle. RPM ranges it 6K to 14K. The whole setup I think is too heavy to fly properly. Huh... Also vibrated a lot. Prop screw is suspect, then the prop. I just want to fly the stupid thing again. Flying Smile

Wrenches on Ebay sold for a bit less than I had hoped for.

Sounds like your fuel may be suspect. Every engine seems to be acting up I'd check that.

Thought you could handle it Smile
I am no expert so you probably mean someone else.
Shake up the fuel, pour it into a clear container, the fuel should be clear with no clouds in it.
If it has clouds or you notice it begins to settle it is contaminated.
This will foul heads more quickly.

Fuel gets coagulated particles in it whether it's contaminated or not, even while you're not using it. I strain mine through two coffee filters once in a while, and wash out the bottle with straight alcohol(not the 70% kind), and dry it before refilling it. Look at the smuck you filtered out through a magnifying glass, it's gooky. Those are expert terms. Do not try to use them at home.
My glowplugs have been behaving much better since I strained that suspect bottle of SIG 35.

Try to never shake your fuel while using it. All the sediment stays on the bottom. Shaking it is as bad as buying gas for your car while the fuel truck is filling the underground tanks.

I have strained it through coffee filters, I suppose it is time again.

On a side note, I have some Traxxas 25% car fuel, can I spike it with some castor and use it? It works, I have used a tiny bit while working on motors. The bottle says for car engines only.

Just spike it with castor. They run car engines with low amount of oil to get max power out of them. Advice 101, never buy a used RC car engine unless you know the owner. lol!

It is very expensive,,your biggest hobby cost with nitro burners is fuel.

If you own a big Nitro heli,,forget about it. Those things are zinging at 90%+ of top rpms most of the time. Buy a shrink wrapped pallet of boxed fuel,,you will be better off. One of my flying buddys does that, said he burned 40+ gallons just learning to hover steady (taught himself with no Sim time at all).

That is great news. I bought a gallon's worth for a nitro truggy, and the truggy never ran. Good thing the truggy was free. Very Happy It's got one of those evil TRX .15's.

Now the question is, how much oil? I can't find the fuel percentages anywhere.

The new Mico-Heli's electric are great fun. Litte Symra S107G fly wonderful with 3ch./ Driftking 4ch is even better. Then got 9958 4ch 2.4 fixed 2 blade and its flys better than I can do right now , but getting there. What I like you don't need to worry about what outside conditions are. I know off topic but another toy to play with.

It was. Pesky trees kept eating the copter and the spendy carbon fiber blades, along with heads, gears, ect.

He is a master now with the copter, when he is in the zone, both radio sticks are swirling mayhem.

And you wont find those, because it is proprietary information. They don't want to give out there formula. No fuel company lists much more than oil content and either syn or natural castor, and thats where the trail ends. They wont give out the antifoamers or buffers or extra snake oil lubes they add.

That being said, I just found a blurb stating that Traxxas top fuel is 16% oil and it is a castor synthetic blend. Mixed by Powermaster fuel (and then whoever mixes fuel for Powermaster) for Traxxas.

Well, Traxxas Top Fuel used to be 33% nitro, They might have backed that down a bit or made a lesser concentration.
