Sig-ment and Ambroid

Which one sands easier? Also does anyone have a good source for just regular Ambroid? I see it is available but, there are many variations.

Ambroid was my favorite, but since I can't find it, I use Testors. It's okay. Can't answer your question, sorry.

I see it as available online but. There are variations nothing that says just "Ambroid" there is ambroid cement is that it?

Might try these people for Ambroid: http://www.wooden-canoes.com/material.htm (about middle of the page) Probably need to order half dozen tubes to spread out shippling/handling. Apparently it's still in demand for canoe repairs.

Didn't need/want that much, so I just stick everything together with Titebond.

Hey thanks for that! I didn't like the price but, the picture allowed me to figure out what I needed. You can get single 3.2oz tubes of it for around $3 or so from online hobby suppliers.

So are you an AHRMA member? If so what do you race? I have missed AHRMA's presence at Mid Ohio the last few years........

Umm, was, once. Too lazy to come up with a new screen name. Have an RD350 that I flogged in the vintage stuff. Past tense; can't afford race tires much less racing these days.

Always wanted to go to Mid-O, especially for the swap meet, and hit some of the other eastern road races. But found out they don't allow dogs at Mid-O and then there was that AHRMA meltdown couple years ago...

Yeah, the swap is a sight to behold and it's all I care for these days. When AHRMA left the racing sucked. What a shame.

"Duco Household Cement" is very similar to Sigment. I can still get regular Ambroid at Scheafers Hobbies in St. Louis and usually pick up a tube every time I'm there. I've never noticed a real difference in their sanding, though Ambroid is usually a lot thinner, and usually requires "pre-gluing" to get a good bond.

Sigment has worked well for me on several planes upon which I've used it. I have several existing planes built in the 60's with Ambroid and they are structurally sound after all these years.

Modern CA has eclipsed the use of the above but they have their attendant complications. Concerns over CA's resistance to nitro have me leaning more toward expoxies and Sigment on my current build a Brodak "Baby Ringmaster/TD .051 combo.

Just for kicks I bought a tube of Ambroid to build a FF 1/2A T-Bird. The glue is very thin and runs out hot and heavy but works fine. They ran out of Ambroid and bought Sig-ment. I like it much better. Ca is way to go unless you have no rush. Ambroid was glue back in the day. Duco also worked well and never liked Testors products.

I sure do like the smell of Sig-ment! Probably not a good thing........I have used some before, I like the bond over CA and I use it in high stress areas. I was mostly concerned with sandability. I have never attempted to sand the Sig stuff and CA is a bear to sand without destroying the balsa around it. Kim suggested Ambroid awhile back because it sands well.

Tite-bond works well also and easy to smooth out with little H2o. I do like smell of Ambroid and Sig-ment but don't stay to linger. I still have cheers

alot of Areo-Gloss and found good thinner. Makes for some interesting fumes but again take models outside. Living in Tucson is great for painting with low humity. I once caught sight of vapors going into the air, like using ca. glue. Right now its 68* outside and will get warmer with mucho sunshine...he..he..

Sounds like a good deal to me! It hardly ever rains here. I fight the sun all summer long for a few measely tomato's.

Been to Tucson and environs for a month-long visit when we took our travel trailer to visit friends.

Sure the sun shines quite regularly but there are also a bazillion other peope with which to contended. Just getting to a destination across town in Tucson can be a chellenge.

I just picked up a tube of Ambroid at my LHS... $4 + tax... I think for some things it might be a better choice then CA . Like bonding large areas like doubles....

I was in Tucson in February with my wife so she could go to the gem show. I chased trains and took pictures... Had a blast... But traffic can be a bear... On a previous trip, while waiting at stop lights, I fell asleep!

Nice photo!

When I was into PAMPA Stunt, I used a lot of Aliphatic Resin Wood Glue, good o'l Titebond, light, strong and easy to sand.

Yah, first time I shot some CA with CA accelerator, I had the burst of fumes rising that I could see,,and feel the heat. Thought I had a alcohol type fire going on. The genie was released from her bottle (Barbara Eden, wink)

Isin't the Ambroid plastic stuff basically Testors?, the squeeze tube looks the same. Have never used Ambroid at all, or researched it. Other than reading about it on here.

Fine with me ! It MIGHT make me finish organizing them! Every time I settle in to sort them, I start looking through them, and the whole project goes down-hill !! I'm STILL sorting through the box-full I bought at the Swap Meet 2 months ago, and when I pulled out my other boxes to check for duplicates, I found some I hadn't looked at yet. Got serious mental problems here....

Well, unless you are in a hurry then just keep doing what your doing. We all have mental problems here so you're in good company.

Forgot I bought a German made hand launch glider kit came with tube of glue called U-Hu. Very strong stuff and high quality. Glider is all wood and biggest one I have seen. 22" winspan is big for H/L/G. I was thinking a TD .010 as power pod but nay to that. Engine just to expensive to use in FF ship.
