Fuel Proofing Water-Transfer Decals ? Empty Fuel Proofing Water-Transfer Decals ?

Post  Kim Thu Nov 15, 2012 9:13 am

I think this has been discussed here before, but my search didn't turn up anything. I've got some decals on the way from Brodak's for my Ringmaster and Buster restorations, and was wondering about the best way to fuel-proof them on the planes.

I've still got an ancient bottle of Aerogloss Fuel Proofer, but remember it as never really drying when I used it back in the day. The decal's surface always seemed to stay tacky with this stuff.

Any tips would be appreciated, with brand-names of the products if possible. Sorry if this is a re-hash.

Thanks Kim

Fuel Proofing Water-Transfer Decals ? Empty Re: Fuel Proofing Water-Transfer Decals ?

Kim,

I am having the same problem on my Bean. The fuel/castor is starting to affect my decals. The decals said they were fuel proof on the card, but not so much. These were old yellow decals from Goldberg so maybe it's the age. I've read in some of the Brodak instruction sheets that they can be coated in thinned dope. I will dig that info up and post it. The problem is if you have plastic covering than dope will look bad. In your case not a problem.

I have had very good results on water-slide decals using Lustrekote clear gloss spray. I mask off the dried-on decal and make one very light pass with the spray and let it dry. Do that several times until it's fully glossed over and it will never fail. The slightest bit too much spray will craze the decal and cause a bubbly mess, so just be very light handed with it and make sure it's dry between coats. The last coat can be heavier. Shake that can for about 3 minutes before you start.

After it's on and dry, you can do your post flight cleanup with liberal amounts of denatured alcohol with no fear of hurting the decal. Also, mine were on top of Ultracote. I don't know anything about how your covering will react. I did this with my Li'l Jumpin' Bean and the decals were about all that was left intact before the rest of her was demolished. The Li'l Satan decals are done the same way.

Can I answer?

I use denatured alcohol. It works okay, just be sure not to whip bubbles into it when you mix it. It doesn't add to your working time.
I've been thinking of acetone, but haven't tested it on balsa scrap yet.

Ah yes, Natured alcohol.
Hope you added some castor oil to that epoxy to prevent binding up bearing down.
