Reed Rubbish and Carburator Capers Empty Reed Rubbish and Carburator Capers

Post  GermanBeez Sat Jun 25, 2011 9:20 am

25th June
1st Test of the Black Widow
After being generously primed, and connected and the Glowplug glowing bright,
it starts, but immediatly goes into slow idle (valve open 4 turns), leaning the mixture gets the engine going a little bit faster, but it soon peters out. this tes was repeated about 5 times. Same Result.
My suspicion lies with the Mylar reed Valve, that is installed in it. on the down stroke, it doesnt seal correctly, so just a small amount of fuel gets pressed into the cylinder. seeing some amount of fuel drip from the air intake, i think that most of the fuel got pushed back into the venturi, and out of the carburator.what do you guys think?

I had a pee wee .020 that did that i just replaced the mylar reed with a copper on because i had on lying around and now the engine works fine although it could also bee the needly valve because i had a surestart and when it started the threads wernt good enough to keep the needle still so it keot boing really lean an slow before cutting out but if this was the case with yours you probably would have noticed the needle moving.

Have you tried checking the glow head gasket/making sure the glow head it tightened down all the way?

I would start there and if nothing is wrong in that area check the crankcase gasket and the venturi gasket next. It is possible that it could be the reed, but they will often run okay even if there is not a complete seal.

Regards, Matt.

Post  GermanBeez Wed Jun 29, 2011 12:56 pm

mmm....i think you got me wrong there Smile
the problem lies in the stroke where the piston compresses the fuel mix in the crank case on its way down.
the problem is that the valve doesnt seal off completly, and lets a lot of pressure out back through the venturi.
thats why not a lot of fuel gets pressed in the actual cylinder...the good news is that if ound a guy who has some old star shaped copper vents, and he will give me some for free because im buying some stuff like a glow plug cable from him anyway....
well, i hope that will solve the problem...btw thanks for everything, guys, i'm glad i have some support as a cox newbie. i really appreciate it.

@ matt

the tank and glowhead gaskets are fully intact, especially the glowhead.
im telling you, that thing has an AWESOME compression!
I've checked them all by dripping some oil on the edges where the gasket sits, and seeing if any bubbles are forming, when i turn the engine over. but i've also dripped some oil on the carb inlet, it confirmed my suspicions, because when the piston came down, bubbles started to form pointing away from the engine. i even applied pressure on the vent, by blowing into it from the crank case side (yes, i did whipe it off Wink ) and the valve couldnt hold it.

cheers

Sounds like it is the reed valve then.

Send us an email and we can send a few reeds your way. sales@exmodelengines.com

Yeah I suspected it was the reed and if there is a LOT of compression I mean too much you might want another glowhead gasket or two in that engine but you can be the judge of that.
All the best,
nitroairplane.

Reed Rubbish and Carburator Capers Empty UPDATE:

Post  GermanBeez Wed Jul 06, 2011 4:50 am

I've switched out the plastic valve for a copper beryllium one, et voilá!
It works great! I've run about 30ccs through it, and it seems like its working better with every run!
It usually runs at top speed with the carb closed to 1 1/2 turns. its unusual, I know, but it doesn't seem
to be running too lean...

Actually i had an 049 that ran at 1.5 turns open perfectly and a .010 that i got a few days ago is too lean at 5.5 turns open i ran it in today at 7.5 turns open. so i guess it depends on each individual engine and what kind of rpm you are getting.

Yep, my Babe Bee runs best with 4 to 4 1/2 turns.
Probably, the jets are a little clogged up in some engines, and in others, they seem to be running on a minimum amount of fuel.
btw, the guy who sold me the engine (from england), described the engine to look like it has never been run, although he's not sure.
he had it standing in a glass box for a while, so i guess this might have been its very first time, its ever been run...

oh boy, I hope nobody will want to kill me for this but i bought it on ebay for around 26 Pounds Embarassed
I know there are probably some guys around here that hate people like me, who try to get their engines
as cheap as possible and are not willing to pay 200 dollars for a motor...
You guys might have noticed that i'm not a hardcore mint condition cox collector.

That seems a fair price but to be honest if it's a nice engine I don't mind spending the money to own it and I am not a hardcore collector either I spent £110 on an ae .1cc that was new in box and I tried to run and it didn't work so I modified
It but to me an engine that runs is worth much more than an engine that is mint and never used.I gEt annoyed when I see collectors that consider themselves hardcore collect loads
Of engine and never run any of the we must remember engines are made to run not just sit on shelves.

yeah, that kinda takes the sense out of collecting combustion engines, doesn't it?
I mean, i dont run mine daily because my neigbours would kill me.
NiB motors are just boring. they dont have their little problems, like
my Black Widow, you don't really get attached to them...
anyway, if you want to see my early collection, go check out my pics in the gallery section. i just took em
this afternoon.

I run my engines about twic a week usually in the middle of he day or at about 6 in the evening and every time my neighbours are home they complane even though we hear them arguing at all hours of he night yet if I complane they claim that thy are "just" "living". They are new to the area I live in and they Have never talked to anyone else appart fro
Complaining.
But to be honest I runny engines at the most convenient tIme of day for them and it is my hobby so I'm not going to stop unless they stop arguing at night and having loud parties. So if they are reading this 
