Thinking WANTED: COX Corvette, Riviera, Ford GT, Chaparral engine mount screws

Post  redwon Mon Jun 24, 2013 5:08 pm

(Newbie to this site as of today but have over 1700 POSITIVE feedbaccks on eBay)

Wanted: a set of five (5) engine to chassis mounting screws-original 1964 COX part number 8279 or that I believe was superceded in 1967 to 8600-6.  Or can anyone identify for me what size those screws are?

Thanks!

The screws you mention are a fillister head self tapping screw. The chassis only could use 3 of the screws to hold the engine on. The stock screws  were an extremely poor design and would fail almost instantaneously. This is the same for the retainer that was screwed from the underside. If your intention is to run the car than these have to be replaced with 2-56 or even better 3-48 machine screws and nuts. Trying to install these is another fun job. There's barely enough room to get the nuts where they need to be. I've done it on the 2 I own. Ken

Thanks Ken, for the message.
I don't plan on running this car-it was missing it's original engine which I recently found and want to install it as original. Do you know the size by chance, of the original fillister head screws?
Thanks again!

I have a few of those cars and I will try and measure one for you tomorrow after work. They are the same for all of those cars.
However, as Ken Cook said, those self tapping screws were poor. The miniscule threads that those screws left on the engine mounting lugs stripped out very easily. Your best bet would be to use 2-56 screws, flat washers and nuts. They will hold up a lot better if you ever decide to run the car.

I measured those screws with my dial caliper. The length is .245 and the thread size is .11

Here is pic of the screw heads as well.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for your help with this. Looks like a Riviera Chassis?
Have you ever tried removing the flywheel from one of these engines by any chance?

I have removed the flywheel due to the fins that were damaged. A properly fitting screwdriver is a must for the retainer screw. This isn't a easy task. The flywheel is retained by a taper lock. If you have a drill press it can make easy work of the procedure. Block the case up on a piece of wood and find a allen screw that will fit in the crank hole and press on the screw. I was able to keep pressure on the screw by inserting a piece of steel dowel rod in the chuck to push on the screw. With pressure on the screw, I tapped the flywheel with a small ball peen hammer and the assembly quickly popped apart. Ken

Thanks again Ken...
I don't have a drill press-any other suggestions?
I have that same problem-damaged fins on the flywheel. But found an NOS replacement awhile back.
I got the retaining screw out without any problem...
Thanks again!

Just be aware that new flywheels are a bit of chore to install. The way I do it is, I put the crank in the freezer over night and I get everything setup and ready for pressing before I take the crank out of the freezer as you can't really use much heat to expand the new flywheel because the plastic fan can melt. However, freezing the crank does make the job a little easier.

Yep that's my Riviera. I've been wanting to run it again but haven't had a chance. I have a funny car I want to run sometime as well.

Thanks for the message, Shawn.
I think I'm going to take the easy way out and just sell this...let you pro's deal with it!
Out of curiosity-do you know of a source for flywheels?

Unfortunately, there are no sources that I know of. So my only suggestion would be to keep an eye on Fee Bay and see if you can get lucky. Flywheels and spur gears are the hardest parts to find separately. In fact, your best bet would be to try and find a good parts car at a cheap price.
