(AWM) Awaiting Maintenance as we say in the military. Thanks for those pictures they will help immensely.

It wouldn't take much effort to remove the sheeting and Epoxy that Bellcrank in. Also it would benefit you to reglue all the joints. Never trust old glue.

Thanks Ron... That's the advice I wanted to hear... at least for the bell-crank mount. The "thicker than spec." wing-ribs have me concerned about weight... so I would have to be careful with re-gluing all the joints. Do you think spot-gluing the ribs/spar-joints with thin CA might be enough? It would be the light-weight option. Definitely epoxy on the bell-crank mount.

As told to me you want to scrape away as much old glue from the joint as possible and re-glue with the same type as originally used. In your case it was probably ambroid. You can still find ambroid, but not real easy. Check Ebay first. Failing that Sig-Ment and Duco are similar and easily found.

Thanks Ron... I'll take your advice. I have Ambroid... and it's still available locally, in case my tube has dried up. It used to be made in Taunton, MA... about 15 mi. away from me! Don't know if it still is.

There's some "oldies" there... I keep em' for the memories!

....and I have riffler rasp/file sets that would be perfect for the task of scraping the old glue out.

haha... The tube says "Ambroid" at the bottom... but the rest of the label is in Spanish! We had a sm. chain of "railroad salvage" outlets up here in the Boston, MA area called "Building 19"... everything was in brown unmarked cardboard boxes on tables/shelves... There was a box full of the "Cemento" tubes... I think they were 25 cents ea. and I grabbed a handful when I read "Ambroid" on the bottom... I love those places!

Our member Kim Stricker recently posted about flight boxes on a social-media site that we share. It struck a nerve with me... to un-bury my "Global-Lil' Pit Kit" for a photo op.  Smile

It would be a fun project to make-up a vintage "period-correct" flight-box or tote.. for nostalgia sake. Display it with vintage accessories that might be found back in the day.

Roddie,
You and I passed some traffic several years back. I seem to remember posting the "instruction sheet" and measured drawings.

If they aren't posted here, I bet I have them in email.

Come-on?  Plans? A manufactured kit?

There isn't a person on this forum that couldn't/shouldn't build a flight box out of on-hand materials right off the top of his or her head.  Shame, shame! Plans...Pshaw.

Hey Jim, See P1 of this thread. I posted images of Global's instruction sheet and further down the page; some drawings I made with dimensions.

I really should build a field box tailored to 1/2A but getting by with an old aluminum tackle box that was given to me by my grandfather when I was about six …...It’s been a field box off and on since I was a teenager…So kind of nostalgic in a way…….Since it’s metal the dry cell batteries stay double bagged individually and are not loaded into the glow lighter box until at the field ….Fuel rides separately in the back of the truck….. The tail gate is the pit area…. Works out OK for 1/2A type flying….

Amazing Robert, I had that identical tool/tackle box as my first flight box only it was green.  I'm talking 1953 ish here.

I kept it for years then lost it will all my stuff in it including a couple of engines.  I racked my brain trying to remember what I did with it.  Then it came to me, I had put it over the foundation and under the floor joists in the basement of our Tiverton RI home when I built in the basement with panelling.  I removed a couple of panels and there it was.

Started me all over in C/L with my son.  I remember the first time he "helped".  He was the hold and let it go guy, about 6 or 7 I would think.  I told him how to do it, hand signals and all, only I didn't tell him to run away from the circle, instead he ran straight towards me.  Luckly I had enough altitude that it went over his head.  Smile

Got to admit, I generated a little smile when I commented on the flight box plans post.  Smile  Might not sit to well with some I thought.  I guess I have built three or four flight boxes, some pretty involved, some pretty simple.  All functional, nothing fancy.  Most got tossed during moves.  Present box with an electric (Tower) panel and a broom handle handle works as well as my son's comercially available box.

We had it pretty good growing up, and didn't even know it. Looking at the bottom of the Ambroid tube I see manufactured in Taunton, MA. I lived about an hour from Taunton as a kid/younger man. Had I caught that in my early 20s, I would have driven to the plant for a case. I also always dreamed of visiting Guillows as they are an hour in the other direction from the same childhood home.
Sigh...

Yo Jim! Same here. Taunton, MA is well within an hour's drive from Franklin where I hail from originally. I was in a band back then, that played a "battle of the Bands" gig at the Roseland Ballroom in Taunton circa 1979.. or sometime near then.

Fast forward 35 years.. I had a CNC job interview in nearby Attleboro, MA. The company had a contract with Guillows.. to laser-cut some of their kits.

I knew about Ambroid glue very early in my life. My mom threatened my dad with divorce.. if she found one more pin mark or glue blob on her dining room table. Laughing

Started me all over in C/L with my son.  I remember the first time he "helped".

Glad it sparked the nice memory Very Happy….. When I got mine from my grandad it was full of lures and tackle so I assumed it was a tackle box…. But they might have been sold as tool boxes as well?…. I’ve had purpose made field boxes before but this one was handy this go round so it got called back into duty…. I made up an inventory to go into it before going to the field because some of the things cross over into shop use as well…. I ought to at least get a Cox sticker for it lol!!
