Painting Monokote is a gamble at best. Surface prep is key and using a red Sotch 7447 pad is recommended. Scuff the area entirely. The surface needs to be cleaned and cleaned well. Surface degreasers like Dupont Prep Sol would highly be recommended. This is a high flash solvents and I would seriously use caution against static due to rubbing the surface. If you know someone in the auto body business they might be able to provide you with this product as you only need about a baby food jar worth to use. Sikkens makes a degreaser cleaner as well which is M-600 but this has solvents which are slightly more aggressive and I would certainly try it prior. Certain chemicals and cleaners can promote fisheye problems. If your unaware of what fisheye is, it would be like trying to paint over a contaminated surface like a oily fingerprint. The paint initially goes on and quickly retreats from that spot leaving a crater like appearance.

I've seen Rustoleum sprayed on Monokote but the main problem is the flexibility of the Monokote and no way to safeguard against the paint shedding. The rattle can paints work far superior when just enough paint is used. When the paint starts to become thick due to multiple coats, the shedding happens at a faster rate. Phil Cartier from Corehouse products sells his version of iron on covering known as SLC covering which we use on foamie combat planes. It can also be used on built up frame work. This mylar like material is a low temp covering which is chemically treated to accept paints and adhesives. Phil recommends basically the same procedure as I have and he's done some really cool paint work very inexpensively . Ken

Degrease before scuffing.  Degrease after scuffing.  Make sure the rag is oil free (clean paper towel should be fine)  Denatured alcohol should be adequate. I am not sure if scuffing is necessary.

Painter's Touch by Rustoleum is supposed to stick very well to plastic, and the gloss colors are suitably fuel proof in the colors I have tested with Sig Champion 25% (1 hour wet with fuel paper towel)

I have not tried myself on monocote, but plan to in the near future as paint is easy and cheap.
