Re: tachometer
Look for one that has an "auto-off" feature.. It saves on battery life if you forget to shut it off.
Re: tachometer
If you have a smartphone you can download an acoustic tachometer free of charge from the net. This us proven to measure the same tach as the optical ones.

Re: tachometer
.....even the engines on youtube videos. Tachs by the engine sound frequency and differentiates between 2 and 4 stroke.

Re: tachometer
Boy, I'll be glad when my 2 year contract is up on this Windows phone. I want a phone tach. Nobody makes the most useful apps for WP. I think maybe august or thereabouts I can finally strap it to a plane and video a wingover into a dumpster.
Bank of America cut off support for their WP banking app. Now I have to drive to the damn bank to make a deposit. Imagine that, driving to the bank

Re: tachometer
yep, last time we talked about this, i think i was taching the above posters video with my tach/phone next to speaker and it was showing the same RPM as the tach on the video. I still would go for a cheep but good Hobby King tach as I wouldn't want my S-5 covered with caster film.
Re: tachometer
Haha thanks Mark, I need to go get gas while I'm out too. I'd light a fire in the trashcan before the stunt but it might make my SD card hard to retrieve.Mark Boesen wrote:lol, Rusty let me write you a "check" for that!

My wife likes to watch old "Colombo" reruns from the early seventies, its kinda neat to look where technology was back then vs. where its at today!

I have one of these cheapies from Hobby King. Not real high quality, but does a good job for the price. As Mark says, at this price it doesn't worry you getting it oily. Shuts down auto. Buttons can be dodgy, but it still seems accurate.

Re: tachometer
I drop my S55 in the trunk of my car when taching the engine before take off so as to save it from castor. You can keep the phone within sighting distance but far enough from the exhaust gases. Sensitive enough to pick up the tach from a distance especially from un unmuffled COX that we now is more than whispering.

Just treat those HK tachs like a porcelain doll, I dropped mine from a table and it is in pieces...amazingly still works too.
I still think the GloBee is better value, more durable, easy to operate. Doesn't go to pieces from looking at it wrong. Big enough to not loose in the grass too.

Re: tachometer
I got too close to the prop with my HK tach and pow, the lense was gone. Next day I found the lens on the floor, undamaged, but the retainer was never to be seen again. Cut the right size hole in the end of a rubber cap, inserted the lens, taped it to the front of the tach and good as new.
