My eldest built this Consolidated Typhoon from a kit in 1990 and won Jr. Scale at the Lawrenceville Nats.
Simple, solid balsa model, hollowed out fuselage with a Dremel, internal controls except the leadouts, with a Cox Babe Bee 049 that I swapped a Tee Dee cylinder and piston but low compression glowhead, half lapped two Grish 5x3 left hand two bladed props together for the scale-like left handed four blader on the real Typhoon's Napier Sabre H-24 engine. Weighed about 6 oz and still looks good even though it's covered with tissue and painted with AeroGloss.
He flew it in 1/2A Speed once when he couldn't get his Speed model running right, on two lines it went about 65mph with an APC two blader, HC head and 65% nitro! Usually flies on 42 foot 010 wire with the four blader.

Wow Chris! That's just stunning! You said he built from a kit. I thought it might have come from Blackhawk.. but I couldn't find a Typhoon amongst their current offerings. It must take a lot of nerve to fly such a detailed and fragile model! My dad used to use tissue/dope on the little Goldberg stunters (Swordsman 18 and Stuntman 23) that he built when I was a kid.

I'll second that! I built a Guillows Typhoon as a kid and guess it was camouflaged too well. I buddy stepped on it before its first flight. Sad

Oh wow,
Sorry guys about the time gone by! I should say thanks and respond here!

AKJ, Thanks man. He was a great builder and painter. He built plastic models like a whiz as a little kid. He hasn't built anything in decades.

Roddie, These kits were from Consolidated in the '50's. He bought some with his allowance from Tony Drago whom which bought a warehouse full of kit stock from New York in the early 90's. He distributed the kits throughout the country just from word of mouth as far as I could tell. I still have a few, the 1/2 A Speed Hell Razor, Corsair, Typhoon and a Spitfire. I used to have the whole collection but sold most of it off. They are super neat, about 18 up to 24 inch, and the great thing is the ability to use any .049-.099 type small engines from the 50's through 60's era. I love building them with period stuff. They're all sheet, blocks and nearly solid but have pretty decent shapes and are hollowed out a bit in the interior. I used drawings from the real ship to optimize the shapes and sizes of the tail and wingtips and then let the kids loose with them.

Arup,
I built the T-28 out of that series of Guillows kits. Pretty neat, I built mine for indoor rubber power. My Mom has a story about how she sat on her cousin's model right after he finished it while it lay in a chair! I never laid mine in a chair for my whole life after that horror story!

I want to build another one. I've got a neat set of custom decals made for the Bendix racer #90 "JOE", a fairly stock FG-1D Corsair painted all white with Navy Blue markings. Another with stuff rounded up for is Cook Cleland's all white clipped wing #94 F2G Super Corsair Thompson Trophy winner and for the High Speed Spitfire in blue and silver too. Maybe a Holland Hornet in one and a Atwood Wasp in another. Along with Froom spinners, Perfect wheels and Grish Plasticote props they'll look great.

Man, I can't wait to finish my shop!

Chris...
