Since I have not ever actually used a real tether car I can't say for sure. There is a park in just a little into the city that still has a tether car ring and I just happened to be there when a few old buggers were starting them up and letting them go. I had to go over there for sure when I noticed they were running Thimble Drome Champions. They had them attached to the center post in the ring by a wire line and a harness on the car. I only really remember telling them that I have some reproduction ones from Nylint and collect Cox Thimble Drome things. Those little cars really haul! I haven't seen anyone use that ring since. I really don't know if it is even still there as the last time I drove past the park, they were repaving the paths and they also built a big garden with benches and all that. I really should go see if it is still there, I wouldn't be surprised if it is gone because it did kind of look like hell with a rusty center post and the cement ring with cracks and parts of it crooked and so on. Anyway, I have built prop rods before, but those were RC. I have always thought about taking one of my Nylint Thimble Drome replica cars and turning it into an engine powered car. Those replica cars also came with copies of the original paperwork that would have came with the actual Thimble Drome cars, I'll have to try to scan those soon.

Nylint cars were made from original molds. I have a Champion blue/ one red and a black Rodzy. I also have three Shrikes and two original prop-rods. You need flat clear surface as these can really move out. Tether cars were state of art in the 30'/40'/50's and a real big deal. In early days there were no plastic and foam toys. U-tube might have vids of early cars and how they ran them. Quite interesting to say the least. Fireworks

The Nylint Company was located here in Rockford, IL. According to local legend, the McCoy cars were made without Dick McCoy’s permission as they assumed he was dead? Supposedly Dick called Nylint and informed them he was still alive.
I was lucky to get the complete series, the detail is pretty impressive, the fuel tank on the McCoy car even has a gasket between the two pieces.

I too have the McCoy one, it is very detailed with open exhaust ports on the dummy engine and even moving gears that move as the axle is turned. I wouldn't be surprised if you could actually use the tank that is in it if you were to swap the dummy engine for a real one.

I was at a Meca collecto in So. Cal. and Dick McCoy was signing box covers for Nylint Cars. So I guess he had some kind of deal going with them. This was quite a while ago. It is very possible to convert these to a real Tether car but wheels /axels/ engine mount need to be replaced. These were called Mite cars as they were much smaller than early cars. The Nylint cars were finished very nice and great show pieces. They came in original colored boxes and paper work as collector p 4th of July Flag ieces. I have three new cars in box.

Yep, I kinda figured so. I thought it was interesting that the story was commonly heard. You would think that a fairly large company would do some research before the start of such a project...unless they made some agreement after?
From what I remember of the Nylint McCoy car, was it was about a engine and gear assembly short of running, the wheels and tires seemed like they'd be good. I had priced a couple McCoy .19 with gear sets, but soon forgot about it as they didn't come cheep.

If you would like more information on tether cars in general check this out: http://www.amrca.com/

They are doing over 200 mph now!

Back in the 40's another type of car racing was also popular. It was essentially gas powered slot cars. They had long tracks that half a dozen cars would run at the same time. I have some old magazines from the late 40's that show these. I believe that they were .60 size engines.

I think Cox (Thimble Drome) actually had a gas powered car track? Serveral years ago a old collector buddy had one and i believe he said it was a Thimble Drome?

I took an old Action Van and mounted a Golden Bee on the back with a pusher prop. Ran it a few times using the control disks but it would tip over if it got going too fast. Then I rigged it as a tether car using an old car wheel to mount the center post. Worked quite well actually.
