Mt. Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson was slain by Benjamin Colton Barnes on New Year's Day. Barnes had fled into the park to avoid capture following a previous shooting incident near Seattle.

Barnes had blown through a chain saftey checkpoint at Longmire and fired shots at those that attempted to stop him. Officers then radioed ahead to Anderson who was located about ten miles ahead up the mountain. When when she encountered Barnes her shot her dead with a shotgun while seated in his car at point blank range.

Barnes then ran off into the snow and a massive manhunt followed. Barnes then died of thermal exposure during the first night of the search and the body was removed the following morning.

Ranger Anderson was 34 years old and leaves behind two small children and her husband. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas and held a Master's Degree in Biology. She had previously served as a park ranger in California.

Anderson's death has cast a pale over many people. Margaret will be remembered as a person to gave her life to protect others.

There is more to the story if anyone choses to read about it.

To me it illustrates an increasing sicknesss within the human soul but there are among us those that make the supreme sacrifice to save others. I can think of no higher calling.

The whole episode demonstrates a gross disregard for human life with many people damaged or terrified as a result.

Fact is that Barnes was known violent trouble-maker with a fetish for guns. Those that were aware of his problems stood by and did nothing to help him deal with his mental problems. Thus they enabled him to do what he did that lead to the killing of National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson on New Year's Day.

It is small consoldation that Barnes died by his own deeds. At least he won't get defended at public expense and live out his life in a federally-funded prison.

.

So you blame them for what he did?. Saying they enabled him is blameing them, pure and simple.

Maybe they did try to help.

As I wrote, there is far more to the story that what I reported and more details are coming out by the day. (my main source of information is The Tacoma News Tribune)

Pictures of snarling Barnes, bare-chested and tatooed with at least a clipped automatic weapon in each hand seems to indicate that he wasn't a particularly nice guy. Barnes served in the US Army in Iraq but was discharged for two incidents of drunk driving with "less than honorable conditions" which allowed him to keep his benefits as a vet. In the Army, Barnes served as a "communications specialist" but whether he served in combat has not been revealed. BTW, not everyone that serves in the Army is a combat veteran: cooks, typists, musicians, athletes etc.

What, if anything, was done to help Barnes will problably come out after Ranger Anderson's funeral and a period of respectful grieving. Barnes' family has expressed their grief over Ben's actions and has reached out to Ranger Anderson's family.

Barnes refused to attend court-ordered "anger management" classes and was in a custody battle over a child that he had fathered.

As the story is playing out there are increasing demands for gun control and a lot of "flap" by politicians spouting worn-out platitudes.

The real issue here is the fact the "perp" Barnes was in do way a respecter of laws. More laws wouldn't have prevented what happened to Ranger Margaret Anderson. Until the realization comes that troubled people exist among us and mental health is an increasingly urgent concern requiring clinical attention gun-related problems will only intensify.

In a time when governmental budgets are strained, mental health matters get the short shrift and government funding shifted to more more popular matters like building sports arenas. For example, here in Washington state, the University of Washington's Husky Stadium is receiving a major re-make on the public "dime" while social and health services are being drastically reduced.

So it's really just a matter of priorities. Sit back and watch the Huskies play football or recognise more pressing needs.
