Cox Glow Plug Voltage Empty Cox Glow Plug Voltage

I have always started glow engines with four parallel D Cells delivering 1.5 ish volts. However I had a number of glow plugs that were used and argued and struggled to get hot enough to start with 1.5 volts. I put two D cells in series for 3 V and the glow plugs lit right up and worked well. Even the ones that argued. Is there a problem in using 3V DC? Or will it burn out the filaments?

Maybe these plugs have a weak electrical connection at the spot weld. I have noticed this too with used plugs. I have 3 D cells in parallel and some barely glow.

Also make sure to shine up the top of the plug with steel wool or fine sand paper. Aluminum oxide is an electrical insulator.

They will burn out at 3V.

My guess is they are very dirty and have a lot of resistance if they survived a 3V blast.
