I recently purchased an .020 for next to nothing. It was seized, filthy, and looked like the cylinder was rusted. When I got it apart on my bench I realized that the cylinder wasn't rusted, that was the color of the barrel. I'm not a collector or expert on these engines (yet), but had never heard of a brown cylinder. Can anyone shed light?

PS-engine has good compression, plan to run it this week.

Thanks, Ed

Probably a cylinder that was de-blackfaced sometime and somewhere.

How 'bout that? I fingered it out! The brown is too uniform to have beendone in somebody's shop. Looks like it came from factory this way.

Probably a R/C throttle ring was on it at some point.

Yes it may be so..the ground neck is brownish because of slight rusting but the fins are black. I also have a No2 new oldstock thin wall cylinder that is rather brown than black and not because of rust. See the one at the bottom:

No,this is neither rust or dried castor. The brown finish looks like an anodizing. There are no inconsistent edges that would suggest someones' homebrew, and the coloring is even.

And no wear marks that would suggest throttle ring.

The throttle ring could have been summarily removed by some prior owner without ever having been used (or used very little), thus no scratch marks.

Well you can't anodise steel for a start-so forget about that as an option. I'd still opt for it having had a rotating exhaust throttle on it at some stage-possibly only at the factory-that was later removed for some reason-the brown could be either castor residue from actual running or simply oxidised oil/grease from initial assembly-if left undisturbed long enough the stuff dries out like this....or it could simply be a case of the cylinder being inadequately blacked during the treatment process-either thru operator error, or because of time, bath depletion etc etc
