Comet Hornet

The Hornet was manufactured in 1959 by Comet Model Hobbycraft. It was produced initially with a Herkimer OK .074 and later utilizing the Fox .070 until a fallout occurred between Fox Engines and Comet models. The Hornet was produced in 1959 as an air prop driven model. When equipped with the Herkimer Cub, it incorporated the “Exclusive Push Button Starter” for easier starts. This starter was not equipped with the later Fox .070 engine Hornet.
Made of the same type of plastic associated with the Comet Belond, it was somewhat resilient when run on a tether. Difficult to find today with intact decals and an unbroken steering wheel. After all, it was meant to be used.

The Comet Hornet was at one time powered by the Herkimer OK engine and then later by the Fox engine. The OK Cub was sold with the "Push Button" starter. One would first push the starter button in and then wind the prop one revolution. When primed and hooked to the battery, one would then push the button in the opposite direction to allow the wound spring to assist in starting the engine. This mechanism can be seen to the right of the ball point pen on the Herkimer OK powered Hornet.
The front Hornet is powered by the Fox engine and is started with a chicken stick.

The first Hornet used the OK Cub 074 and had no automatic starting. The the Fox 07, also manual start. Lastly the Herkimer 06 with the pushbutton. The 060 with the glowhead may have been one of Herkimers best engines.

The push button starter actually pulled a pin releasing the windup spring, pretty cleaver.
