Me personally? While the OEM one is still available from EXModelEngines and Cox International, why bother with making do when I can easilly get new?

Now, If I could buy a bunch of dart shaft o-rings locally, I would try that. Just because I like to try different things...especially since I squeeze a penny head until the penny is dead!

Now if I suspected an o-ring and had some spare fuel line, then I would slice off a piece just for the sake of seeing if that was my issue. The Paul Gilbert document describes the process.

Have you gotten it yet? I think you will find it a quick read that will leave you poised to jump back in quickly. I think I have a copy, and can send it your way via email...or grab it from the link in your other thread.

Oh, and hang o. For few minutes. Just like a Windows computer, there are a half-dozen ways to accomplish the same thing. Five more answers will land before midnight (chuckle).

Thickness is kinda critical from what I can see. .....how thick ? Was the original an o ring or some kind of gasket material?

I have used dart O-rings before, but was not completely pleased with the fit. I ordered a couple of sizes from McMaster-Carr that fit better, but I'm not at home and do not remember the ID/OD that I use. If I can remember, I'll check when I get back.

Cox venturi gaskets looks like neoprene:

https://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-neoprene-fuel-tank-line-10.html

Some common types of O-ring materials including Nitrile, Neoprene, EPDM Rubber, Viton and Silicone. You can flatten an o-ring on a fine sandpaper.

I finally gathered what I needed to cut venturi gaskets out of silicone fuel tubing, but it took several attempts to finally get a good one . Then I determined it was just too thick....quite a gap before tightening screws...so I made a thinner one...still a gap to squeeze shut. Last one was maybe 1/16 " thick. How much gap and squeeze/compression against this tubing gasket is tolerable? Was tougher than the pics and instructions made it look. Bad eyes, unsteady hands don't help.... doubt i can make one thinner than the last one. Everything looks bigger in forum pics!

Wow.. I wish I'd seen this thread weeks ago. I've made gaskets out of kitchen-gloves. Do you remember the slogan; "so flexible.. you can pick up a dime..."? They were "Playtex" Kitchen gloves.. and Walmart still sells them.

BabeBee venturi gasket Kitche10

I've made tank-back venturi gaskets for Cox reed-valve engines.. ie: Babe Bee, Golden Bee etc.

Obtain a plier-type standard hole-punch (1/4" dia.) Punch-out some areas high on the cuff.. to retain the integrity of the glove.

BabeBee venturi gasket Kitche11

Collect the cut-outs and punch their centers .125" (1/8"). Pick the "nicest one" (closest to center..) and install it on the intake-side of the venturi-tube.

BabeBee venturi gasket Gap_ex12
BabeBee venturi gasket Gap_ex11

The material is spongy. When you mate-up the backplate to the tank-bowl (with its fuel pick-up positioned where you want it.. ) there will be a "slight gap" between the two.. (see below)

BabeBee venturi gasket Gap_ex13

When compressed, the gap closes and the seal is made.

Well mine from tubing turned out thicker than that...gap is bigger. But I guess it will work ok. Not good at small precision surgery anymore!

You could try something similar to the short black fuel tube like the PT19 fuel line. If it's the right ID and OD, chuck it in your drill press onto an inverted bit, ~.078" (or thereabouts), and spin it up slicing it with a razor till you get the best thickness. Those gloves Roddie uses look good too. The OEM gasket is flat, not toroidal like o-rings are.

Ya...i was certain it would work fine, just needed a bit more squeeze to button it up. Dissassembled it again today and everything appears  copacetic......Wink  chucking it all in a drill sounds like a great idea! I used the old bamboo skewer technique which takes a steady hand and sharp eyes.

Dart o-rings! As mentioned several times already, no need to re-invent the wheel.

Throwing darts, as seen in pubs...

They work better than anything and are reuseable. They come in packs of 100 and are very cheap.

Beware that the vintage Cox pot-metal (Mazac/Zamac?) tank-backplate is fragile. If a venturi gasket is too thick.. or tough to compress, it could pose undue stress on the backplate prior to its sealing around the tank-bowl. The tank could leak. The backplate could fracture where the screw-heads seat.

Just something to be conscious of..

Wasn't THAT hard to push the gap together!... Mine is less than 1/16 " thick. I'm not driving 60 mi round trip to look for something that probably is unfindable around here when I can make something from materials on hand with a bit of scrounging. My backplate appears to be brass also...not potmetal.

None were ever brass. They're just plated with a gold-coloured coating. Earliest Babe Bee backplates were silver colour. Probably zinc plated.

Uh oh roddie. Wish I knew that before.... I had to compress a couple of mine pretty decent. I guess I will have to take them apart and see which had teh thick gaskets. Or would one think now that they're compressed they will be fine.

What, Bob? Are moderators supposed to use simpler syntax so as to appeal to the masses? Lol. You know I've always been a bit anal about the use of our language, and we have lots of self-taught engineers around here.. I coulda said "Donut-Shaped." But that might have made me hungry...Mmmmm, Dooonuuts... Doh, Gotta go now!

The dart o rings I tried were too fat, like in the doughnut (toroidal) kind of way. Mine must have been too toroidal as a matter of fact. I tried to split the toroidal lengthways, no dice.
If I can cut silicone tube paper thin that works for me, even if a little irregular. I certainly would not force the backplate in any way. YMMV
