W Element Glow Heads
Hello all,
I recently came across a box of old glow stuff, and found that I have five of these "W" element glow heads. From what little I've been able to learn, they were only produced for a short time before they stopped due to patent issues, and therefore are supposedly very rare.
I haven't tried to apply any current to them for fear I might ruin one if it were actually good (which is a slim chance, I know). I'm basically just trying to determine if they have any value or if anyone out there is interested in them.
Thanks

keso:
A used and unconfirmed "w" element glo head is little more than a curiosity piece of neglible value.
Put them to 1 1/2 volts and see what happens.

They are pretty rare. I have one that's been rattling around in my used parts box for many years. I plugged it in recently and it lit up just fine, so the chance yours are good is not slim at all. Some of the collectors here can tell you more about them. I never noticed the ring around the top fin on mine. I'll look when I go to the shop later today.

I would point out the tool marks on the heads show possibly indicating they have failed in previous useage. They may or not work. Both are possible.

Re: W Element Glow Heads
Awesome guys, thanks a lot for the info. I think it's safe to assume that everything I have that is glow was well-used by either myself or elder brethren many moons ago. I'm going to see if those W heads work and let you guys know, for what it's worth.
I haven't tried to run any of them yet, but the more I fiddle with them, the more I think I should get out the old test stand and fire one up.

Jason: Didn't I post that previouly? (See above)
BTW, it takes little more than a paper clip and a flashlight battery to test whether "glo" actually glows.

Production of the 'W' element WAS NOT discontinued due to patent issues.
They are somewhat rare, as rare as any 'product' engine made for an appx. three year period ('69-'72) as that's what glowhead was used.

Maybe you could just file "angry eyebrows" into it.

Re: W Element Glow Heads
Thanks Mark B for the new info. I must have gotten that patent issue story from the Cox wiki page.
Q: is one D cell enough for a valid glow test, or does it take the current of two in parallel? I've tried to light a few of the W element heads with a single D cell, but didn't see anything. I seem to recall that two are required, but I haven't rigged up a battery holder yet. Just wanted to ask if it would be worth it, or was the "1-cell" test good enough?

To run my Cox engine I used one of these:
To start my Cox engines I use one of the Cox items:
See details
Cox Starter Battery Box (with clip) OEM Style
SKU: BTBXOEM
Our price: $ 19.95
To test glo I use a D cell battery and a paper clip.
Two batteries in combination deliver the amperage needed to start a Cox engine because it's firing under compression.
BTW, the battery box shown is availabe with or without the clip.

khe: The additional amperage provided by two D cells in parallel allows the engine to be started because firing under compression requires more amperage not voltage..
Testing whether a glo element glows can be done with a single D cell using a paper clip to make the contacts needed.
If you tested the "w" filiments correctly and they didn't illuminate it strongly suggestive than they are burned out.

Your welcome, it's not the first time I've seen that. Warren knows better, it's likely he's probably not got around to change it.
