I have a foam cub that has seen it's day, so I have decided to give it a new life. Here I will post progress and pictures.

It will be powered by a pre-96 Cox Black Widow, three sub .9g servos, a 300mah lipo and a small ESC to regulate the voltage 4.8v. 2.4ghz RX

It will have a steerable tail wheel for easy taxing, an original Cox Dragonfly throttle/muffler combination. I want to uses wing struts but don't know how yet.

this sounds like a cool prod. you gutting the internals, or are you just replacing the motor?

Thanks. I removed the internals, they were on 27mhz and the onboard servos were not very powerful. HOWEVER, I flew it with stock equipment, it seemed to do fine until I folded the wing. Hence the need for throttle, wing struts, etc. The stock board didn't have any extra channels for throttle.

What do you think about servo size?

I think in the 9g range is good.

I was going to use 6gs, I think I'll use 9gs just to be safe.

fwiw, alot of the 9g's servos will take 6 volts. You could go 800 or 1000mAh 2 cell pack that way, and still stay way under the reccommended flying weight and have some zippy, strong servos that you could dial down with a comp radio.

This is a great little regulator that I have used several times. lightweight, thin, dependable, ect.

i have to agree, the project im working on is a light weight slow flyer, but better to error on the side of safety. 9g servos will serve you fine. also, make sure they dont generate alot of noise!

The plane is already heavy, and I don't want it to fly and land like a pig. Laughing

How long will a 300mah lipo last one the reciever? I'm using a 10a brushed speed controller to bring the voltage down to 4.8v. I have a Dx6i computer radio.

Thanks Dave, I like it also. Friends/Meeting Very Happy

Sorry, not much progress. Life has been pretty busy and I don't have a workspace where I can set stuff up for very long. I will try to get some pictures up.

Anyway, I have some glider servos that are very high torque and weigh around 7g. I decided to go with those with some grommets to help with vibrations. Basically I've got the motor attached, servos loosely in, and a plan. Wink

Isn't that how all things start.
But I think you should put carbon rod indie the wings to stop the folding. Trust me it works well.

I might try it, the wing is just so thin - the carbon that would fit inside wouldn't do much of anything. I'll also need a new one as the original is trashed. Struts look more scale to me and you can stress them until you rip the wing in half. Very Happy I want to be able to do some high G maneuvers.

No they cant be that thin can they?
Maybe you could make another set of wings for it out of Balsa or Depron if you line.

Here are some pictures, as promised. Notice the big bush tires to adapt to our grassy runway. You're probably thinking an .020 would be a much better option. You're right. Proportions are more like a CL plane. Shocked I just hadn't realized the potential these things have.

The bubbles under the fuselage aren't from fuel - they're from holding it too close to the stovetop while trying to remove some hot-melt glue a year ago. Shocked

I made the horrible mistake of building a micro EPP biplane with it. It was trash after that, way too heavy. On the other hand, I repaired a 450 3D plane's nose several times, including holding the mount on just with glue. It's great stuff.
