Use an aluminum safe product. I use "anaerobic" sealant from Permatex

http://permatex.com/products/product-categories/gasketing/anaerobic-gasket-makers-flange-sealants/permatex-anaerobic-gasket-maker-detail

Most auto parts stores sell it. It is kinda expensive for the little tube, but nothing too crazy. Get the small tube since barely any is used on these engines.

For a tanked engine I fill the groove in the tank, strike the top flat, clean up the inside of the tank with some rubbing alcohol on a paper towel, assemble and clean the outside.

I also seal the venturi by applying to the o-ring. If you get it in the venturi, chunks foul the reed and the engine won't run. (learn from my mistake) at least it cleaned off my reed just fine. A stripped q-tip from the reed side, wet with alcohol, will clean this out...but it is a pain.

I also seal the gasket at the crankcase. Apply a very small amount to both sides of the paper gasket and install.

Another thing to watch out for is sometimes the screws bottom out before they pull the assembly tightly enough together(the holes are deep enough, but they can be incompletely threaded). This is where a 2-56 bottoming tap is handy. Or you can shorten the screw by a thread or two but some of them barely bite already, so I don't like that option.
