Does anyone know where I can get a replacement reed valve and retaining clip for a Cox Sportsman engine? Thanks Andy

A new reed can be cut out from an old floppy disk. The circlip McMaster Carr may have. Keep your eyes peeled on ebay also.

I assume both are missing or damaged?

I purchased a used Sportsman on Ebay. It arrived in the mail today. The outside looked well used, particularly around the carb area and prop drive area where it was graying. Someone had taken the carb off and there were tool marks. The top of the glowhead looked ok, but again like it had seen some use. The compression on the engine, however, was amazing. I cleaned up the outside and removed the glowhead, and the piston looked barely used. The glow head was very strong too. I thought I would crank it up. So it did. Amazingly it started in a few flips and I was running it very rich when it stopped. Long story short, it ate the reed and clip. I took it apart and removed the offending pieces - namely reed valve and clip. Anyway, bad move on my part. Next time inspect the engine and make sure all parts are secure. I am guessing that this engine saw very little use, but sat in someones garage for a long time. Anyway, if I can get it back up, its going on a Phantom Mark XV.

I do see the clips and reeds show up on Ebay once and a while. You should contact Matt at Exmodelengines. He has parts kicking around that are not listed on the site. He has helped me out of a jam a few times.
