Plug it or use it?
Good evening,
I have a well used TD 049 that is drilled for pressure at the factory nipple and the venturi has also been drilled out. It looks like a real runner . I compared the venturi to one that is not drilled and it is bigger by a little. I thought about putting the smaller venturi on it but I could not find in the search anything concerning sealing the drilled crankcase.
Does anybody have an experience with plugging the crankcase? Or should I run it on pressure like it is?
I know it will probably slice my finger either way.
What do you say, guys?
John

As long as it works you can seal it about anyway you want: silicone glue or cap it off with plastic (vinyl) tubing melted on end, apply warm, when cold it should lock on. Or run it on pressure, thats usually a good thing.

One could also seal the hole with J.B. Weld. Just keep it off the interior bearing surfaces.

Re: Plug it or use it?
I think that I will try to run it on pressure with the larger venturi then, just for grins before I plug it, if I do. Will post my results if I make the change.
Not much to attach a pressure line onto but I have seen topics here dealing with that, just didn't think it would apply to me until I got this new (to me) engine. I've been lurking on this site for a while before registering.
My last TD 049 was mounted in a Twilighter (scratch buiilt from a Randy Randolph plan from Model Builder) and it greatly advanced my flying success as I was learning to fly R/C by myself; but it did not have and certainly did not need pressure.
It sure has a lot of "provenance"-- bored out venturi, drilled for pressure, great compression, scrapes on the spinner, cracked carb body and what appears to be a well made one-off motor mount of bar stock, somebody certainly had a long relationship with this one.
If they could only talk...
Ok, good advice, thanks!

Engines do talk, John.
With tight gaskets and good compression in good state of repair with the right prop, right glow plug or glow head, right fuel with right oil and right mixture setting, they sing!
Good luck with your prized engine, please give us a run report!

Yeah and a video would be great too. We love those.

Y'all know what?
"GallopingGhostler" has pretty much -- "Said It All!"
I'll re-assemble the TD 049 on pressure with a small tank for a bench run.and see how wild of a song I hear!
I would like to think that this engine must have been very special to someone for all that attention so I might as well see what it will do before I attempt to neuter it back to stock.

Great decision John , If it were that special to someone else there is a song to sing in its self .
