[solved].049 Control Line models? Empty [solved].049 Control Line models?

Post  Ivanhoe Sat Dec 10, 2011 8:09 am

I'm just finishing the "Li'l Jumping Bean" for a Babe Bee, and I have "Li'l Satan" started for another Bee, my question, probably for the more mature (Older!) members is this, can anyone remember any other US kits/plans for similar models from the same era?
I like the simplicity of these two, and I know that 1/2A C/L was BIG in the US in the '50s, and there must have been loads of similar models. All I really need is names and brief descriptions to allow me to find the plans. (I don't want all-sheet types like "Li'l Devil").

Any help and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Wilf

I hear the Baby Flite Streak is one of the best aerobatic performers of all. That's according to one of the old guys at RCG. Brodak sells it.
http://brodak.com/control-line-kits/brodak/1-2-a-series/1-2a-baby-flite-streak-kit-beam-mount.html
I think most Brodak models come with a radial mount adapter.

You'll love your Bean, mine is a great flier, really stable and does nice tight stunts. The rear fuse will break, but it's an easy field repair with CA and will be flying again as soon as you get your lines untwisted. Mine has broken so many times, I may put a short Li'l Satan type tail on it. I have a Satan too. Both have Black Widows. One of my favorites is my Stuntman23, but it's a sheet winged profile, so that takes it off your list. I shortened it for the same reason as the Bean. That made it fly aerobatics much better.

For what it's worth, sheet winger stunters don't fly nearly as well as built-up wing stunters.

This from my own experience.

Thanks for the suggestions, Rusty, I discount the FliteStreak, it's just a scaled-down Peacemaker, and since I have a full-sized Peacemaker running a PAW 2.5 diesel I don't really want a little version!
I learned from comments here about the Bean's fuselage weakness before I built it, so mine has Bamboo reinforcement over it's full length, not very pretty, but will save a lot of CA! I'm looking forward to flying something that small again, in my earlier modelling life I flew combat and stunt for many years, but always the "Big stuff"

I know the Ringmaster series, yes, very nice looking models, must put on the "Get plan" list, don't know the Li'l Wizard, must find that one, as I've said in another answer here, Flitestreaks are a no-no I'm afraid!

For me, Joe Wagner's Veco/Dumas "Scout" will always be the premier 1/2A Stunter. Joe's design was changed somewhat when marketed by Dumas Models, but still seemed the coolest plane in the sky when i was a kid. The photo is of the one we flew in '68, which I've restored and still fly. I think it is still kitted by someone, but not sure. I believe you can still get plans for the origianl from Joe. I've got a set, and a nearly-finished original on my extensive "back-burner" table.

[solved].049 Control Line models? Scout_10

My second is Walt Musciano's "Big Otto". It's a fat-winged combat wing that was kitted by Scientific Models, starting in the early 60's. Properly balanced, it flys wonderfully without a wild engine up front. A good, steady run at 12-13K on a 6-3 will pull it around great, and it has a great glide-to-landing on it's single main wheel. It's about the simplest built-up wing model you can get...no spar...just a thick L.E. and T.E., and a box fuselage that can take a wedge tank or left empty for use with a tanked engine.

I liked it so much that I built a +10% version and put a Tee Dee .051 in it.

Wilf:

I would add the old Sterling "Baby Ringmaster" as supreb 1/2A built-up wing" stunter. Although Sterling is long gone the BR kit is available from Brodak and Pat King www.stunthanger.com

The kit cost is now 35 clams (We Washingtonians use "clams" rather than $$$ quite often) It's a local "thing" here. Laughing

[solved].049 Control Line models? HybridStuntplane

Howzat for a Li'l Jumpin Bean. I think that belongs to Bare at RCG.
It has the good old wooden nose too. I hate that nylon clip. I turned mine into a hybrid nose after it broke off. The nylon one is an unnecessary weak point.

Yes, I do like the Ringmaster, always intended to build the big one, but never got around to it, so I think the Baby version might be my next when I can get a plan (I don't ever build from kits)

I prefer building from kits because the wing ribs are provided in laser-cut form.

But "to each his own".

OK Folks, the consensus would seem to be towards the Baby Ringmaster, so be it.

I just downloaded the plans, and it will be my next build, must finish the other 3 part-built ones first though!

Thanks for the suggestions, one or two others have gone into my "Must build THAT" file!

From my own experience you'll find the BR an easy build and a fine flyer.

You might want to go to: www.brotherhoodofthering.com and join in the discussion of Ringmasters of all sizes.

A little slab side and wing Brodak trainer. I built this one because it was very similar to the one me and my dad flew when I was just a pup. Not as glamorous as the baby Ringmaster tho'.

Gotta recommend the Baby Flite Streak too. Had a couple of those in my youth, and they were good stunters with a Golden Bee. Also had a Frog Talisman, slightly larger model for an .09 engine, very similar to the Flite Streaks in design. I seem to recall a Guillow's Baby Trixter in there somewhere. And though I never built one, there are small versions of the Berkely Zilch. Lots of choices!

Thanks for the suggestions, if I can refer you to an earlier answer I gave
" I discount the FliteStreak, it's just a scaled-down Peacemaker, and since I have a full-sized Peacemaker running a PAW 2.5 diesel I don't really want a little version!" Same goes for the Talisman.

However, I'll look into those others you mention, I usually spend more time building than flying!

Okay, though I fail to see why having the larger version precludes the smaller one! Just saying that if you're looking for a good flyer, the BFS is hard to beat!
