Cox restorations for the week
Here is a pic of the Cox engines I have restored the past week. Most needed new carb bodies and tanks. Tank rot is still prevelant. Notice none of the fuel tubes are connected to the tanks. The chlorine in the new PVC tubing leaches out and eats away the delrin over the years. Say no to tank rot and disconnect your fuel tubes from your plastic tanks in storage.

I don't drool as a rule, but I did salivate a bit.
The red PeeWee spinner and the black start spring
on the Medallion definitely caught my eye.
Thanks for preserving Cox history Jason.

Wow. Nice job, and awesome to see all those together as a 'unit' happily restored. I am fortunate enough to get my first TD this past week, but am now jealous to show it after my repairs, unlike yours.

Thanks for the comments. I have more engines in my restoration que to go through yet.
Here is a post about tank rot from a previous .010 and .020 engine lot I bought off of eBay in 2012.

PVC = Poly Vinyl Chloride. Over time the chlorine leaches out from the clear PVC tubing.
I'd probably be banned from the forum if I posted pics of my entire Cox collection.....

I didn't get everything I asked for either. Unfortunately most of the plastic parts for the restoration came from MECOA.

If I had a spare I would send you one Jim. My rule of 3's is shot to hell on the TD .020's I got rid of one to help a guy out and only have 2 left. The .020 TD is one of the best engines to come out of Cox factory.

Do all the fuel tubings have chlorine?

Jason: Do all the different types of fuel tubings have chlorine? Like the colored soft Dubro tubing. I thought it was made from a rubber product and not a PVC product for more flexibility.

NICE Jason , They are all looking good !! Those .010-.020s are a real challenge to clean I find when your finger is as big as the engine Got a few I need to do myself but currently working on some others 4-5 at a time . I got some of Bernie's parts they look so good in the new looking bags I hate to take them out and a free pin with some of those LH boil before you us them props .. Thanks for the tip on the hoses I will remember when reassembling . Eric

Didn't realize that PVC tubing can cause plastic deterioration. Perhaps this is a good reason to go to say, silicon fuel tubing? - George

Other tubing can be used but I like to keep them original. Silicone tubing has a hard time staying on the short fuel nipples on these small engines.

Re: Cox restorations for the week
Last 2 evenings of restorations. Sometimes I spend more time on babe bees but there are diminishing returns on them. If it's an early one then I'll spend more time on it. Later ones not so much.

Looking good Jason , what are you using to clean with if you don't mind me asking , I been using denatured alcohol and recently have been getting a tarnish after soaking only 2 day on the BB cases and that's a pain to get off ? the tanks are no problem chuck them in a drill and some worn out sand paper then polish. can't see it that well in the pic but its there I can sand it out but a lot of work to get in the recess places. getback

Jason, are you preparing these for selling? If so, where do you have them for sale?

Re: Cox restorations for the week
Never sell many. I do need to thin down my babe bee engines though. I like fixing and restoring them.
Once I get my CNC mill done I was thinking about making geared twins with the babe bees I have and selling them that way.
For cleaning I also use denatured alcohol. But I never soak more than a few hours. The alcohol is hygroscopic and the water in it is reacting with the aluminum. I take a forney fine brass wire brush to finish off cleaning any castor residue.
In badly stained cases and tanks I'll take steel wool to them. I completely remove the crank from the case to do this.
On the tanks I'll chuck them in my mini lathe. Same with glow heads. I take sandpaper between the fins to make them look new.

Re: Cox restorations for the week
Thanks Jason ; Its funny some can take it and others cant if you leave them too long in the denatured alcohol, forgetting and not having the time gets to be a problem ! You engines look Great !! and you got a bunch done in just a week Eric

Doesn't it contain water?

Doesn't denatured alcohol contain water? Water can cause aluminum to oxidize or tarnish.
I use old fuel. Any fuel over 1 year has lost most of it's nitro and makes nice engine cleaner. Besides most of my fuel is over 15 years old. Be careful if you use radiator fluid because the fumes bother some people and the fluid is toxic to dogs.
P.s. Check the denatured alcohol label for contents. An additive may be water.

Re: Cox restorations for the week
I think your thinking of isopropyl alcohol that can have up to 50% water added. Denatured alcohol is ethanol with usually methanol added. Adding water to ethanol would still make it drinkable of which the TTB would not like.
