Thanks Troy, Doug and Andrus. I'm pretty sure that this injury was a result of lifting a VERY heavy (nearly 300lbs.) transformer (team-lift with a fellow employee) off the floor and onto a skid. Neither of us expected it to be that heavy.. but after dead-lifting it.. there was no sense in putting it back down, when the skid was right there next to it. I mentioned all of this this in another thread a couple weeks ago.. so I'm reiterating. I didn't start having trouble until a few days later.. so I couldn't ethically report it as a work-injury.

I'm no stranger to back-injury.. and back "problems" run in my family. My dad, two younger brothers and me are all tall through the trunk. We're all 6+ feet tall and wear trousers with a 30" inseam.. Laughing We've all had back problems at one point or another. My dad had micro-surgery (probably around my age) to relieve the stenosis (spinal-arthritis) in his back. He was like a "new man" following the procedure. My youngest brother blew-out (squashed..) 2 discs in either his lumbar or thoracic region which needed to be completely removed.. leaving three vertebrae to fuse together. That was decades ago when he was in his 20's.. He's a "Stone-Mason" by trade.. and I don't need to tell you how much of a strain that's been on him ever since. Being self-employed and facing fierce-competition in the stone-trade over the last 10 years along with going through a divorce.. leaves him unable to afford health insurance. He's in MUCH WORSE shape than I am.. and has now lost the feeling in his fingers/hands. He "eats" x10 Advil "Liqui-Gels" daily.. just to make it through. Mad

Doug, I haven't heard of "Soma"... but was prescribed (this week) "Cyclobenzaprine" (Flexoril) 10mg x3/daily. I actually get more relief from OTC Naproxen Sodium.. but I really don't like taking meds of any sort unless I'm in excruciating pain. Prior to the recent Flexoril.. I was prescribed Diclofenac Sodium tablets; a leading osteoarthritis med. which gave me bad headaches.. (one of the side-effects..) I was getting them for a week after stopping taking it. For me; the risks outweighed the benefits.

I've been receiving for the first time in my life; PT for almost 2 months now, twice a week.. and can't say that it's helped. I usually recover from these episodes in two or three days.. but not this time.

I actually don't feel too bad.. unless I have to bend forward.. or carry weight out in front of me. For example; I can push a lawn-mower for hours.. but using a string-trimmer for just two minutes will do me in.

For the last several years; having to bend forward for any more than a minute or two, causes my back-muscles to spasm. My wife was watching me replace a water-pump in my car.. where I had to lean-over the fender.. (you know the drill..) and it was literally killing me.

I don't favor taking a needle to the spine (steroid injections)... but that's coming on Oct 2nd. I'm out of work with no pay until then. A friend told me that he "crawled-in"... and after having them; "danced-out". That's encouraging.. but my anxiety-needle is pegged.. due mostly to my recent employment situation.

It's an absolutely gorgeous day today.. (finally..) and what I should be doing is flying my Cox PT-19 Flight-Trainer... Rolling Eyes (pokes Kim..) I've got one more freshly-rebuilt product-engine that needs a home.. but the models' fuel tank (bowl) doesn't want to stay snapped-on. I really need to address that issue.. and have some fun. Maybe I can rig-up a small wedge-tank. There's plenty of room in the nose, behind the firewall to do that.

With a .09 that is very very bad advice.... I was just kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Love This Forum!... Laughing Phred... you're awesome! Don't worry.. I'd never try that.. although I imagine that someone has done it..

I owe Bob and Ron a bit more "effort" in getting this engine put back together.. after receiving parts and tools from them. Ken also sent me a nifty fuel-bulb...

Here's an excuse that you can all throw tomatoes at me for.. I can't get my damned video-camera to work. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes  I've got half a dozen airplanes RTF... have bench-run all their engines.. (good to go..) and I can't prove it.

I may need to try resetting the camera. It isn't recognizing the media (discs or cards).. I've tried reformatting the cards.. no go. The camera is a Sony DCR-DVD650 and cost $400 when we bought it. It's about 8 years old.. but we've hardly used it.

My Samsung Galaxy G4 will shoot video.. but not "hands-free". I have a tripod for the Sony camcorder. I shot my "Ace-throttle" and "Tub-Dyno" vids using it.

Everybody shoots vids of their activities. That's what we're used to.. not; "gee.. guess what.. I ran an engine today".. or "I got some flights in today.. but you'll just have to imagine my experience"..

That may sound cynical.. but when we're talking about "Roddie" who hasn't flown in decades.. I just couldn't fly without some sort of "proof" that I actually did.

That's a [bleep]-poor excuse I know.. but I've always been a "loner".. and never counted on any help.. including my wife to shoot a video. Closest we came was the first CEF Reed-Speed contest.. where I couldn't even get the plane off the ground.. Rolling Eyes

Soma is not for pain, it relaxes the muscles and takes pressure off nerve. That along with heat works well for me.
Flexoril is the other I know of and never worked well for me. Also wear a back support often. Good luck.

I'll have to ask my doctor about Soma. My wife takes "Tramodol" for her piriformis-syndrome. It's a non-opioid pain-med.. but has recently become classified as a control-substance because it does have withdrawal side-effects. She'd been on Darvon for years and previous to that; Darvocet.. which had long-term liver toxicity.. because of its' acetaminophen ingredient. Darvon was taken off the market 5 or 6 years ago.. because it was a low-level narcotic.. not being prescribed much any more. I'd read about the move to discontinue it before it took place.. and my wife was freaked. Being an opioid; she'd experienced withdrawal more than once if she ran "short" on her prescription. Not a fun thing to go through.. The Tramodol has been a better alternative.. because it has no narcotic effect.. and is generally being prescribed now to treat chronic low-level pain. She has many days when she can skip taking the med altogether.. but will feel symptoms of withdrawal. Unlike Suboxone; prescribed to treat opioid withdrawal.. Tramodol does target the body's nerve-pain receptors.

I get some relief from it.. but don't like taking "her's" for fear of her running short. My pain is not constant either.. and I find that I can control it when it acts-up.. by taking "Aleve" (Naproxen Sodium OTC) and the recently approved for OTC "Lidocaine" patches or ointments.

I have a good back-brace. I bought it years ago.. but when we moved, it got packed away. It's probably in a box with my 1/4"-32 glow-plug tap that I can't find... Laughing

Hey Roddie, you don't owe me squat. I'd rather you get your pain in order, than run an engine.
Here's some gorey pix of my back mess. Left pic(don't mind the butt crack) is after surgery last
June with staples still in, and the other one is today. Sciatica pain gone, but still dealing with the
incision site pain. Just started PT. Oh, I had all 5 lumbar fused, and haven't worked since. Going
back soon I hope.

Jeeeesus.. Bob... Damn! I feel like a pussy.. How'd you end up needing four discs removed??? My first incident where I ruptured two lower-lumbar discs happened in the early 90's working at my (then) in-laws hotel. The 19" color-portable TV's were aging and I was the maintenance mgr. charged with swapping-out malfunctioning TV's if a customer was having trouble. One day when doing this.. I sat a broken TV on the floor.. and when I went to remove it from the room, I had to lift it from the floor.. rather than from a bureau. When I did.. I felt (and heard) a "snap" in my spine and literally saw "stars". I knew I'd hurt myself real bad. Until I received chiropractic therapy; the sciatica was awful. Several years later.. I would suffer a compression-fracture in the thoracic-region when lifting a heavy piece of audio-equipment (a large sound-mixing board) through the open tailgate-window of an SUV. That was a chest-high "team-lift" with a helper. I felt the tell-tail "pinch".. when it happened. An MRI confirmed the damage.. but I've never had any surgeries for either injury.

You've obviously had some serious work done there. I wish you the best and to finally be pain-free. How long had you suffered with this?

Hi Mauricio, I am ok.. but am now officially unemployed due to my back pain. Lucky for me; I have the band (music-performances) for some income. Even then I have to be careful when lifting heavy amplifiers/speakers etc.

My engine is still in pieces.. but I have wanted to reassemble it soon, since Bob and Ron were kind enough to send me the needed tool/parts to get it running.

Roddie, I thought I read you might try a steroid epidural.
I used to get one every 3 or 4 years, and had great results.
Kept me from under the knife for almost 20 years. Last
October I started to get the sciatic lightning bolt down my
left leg again, and thought the shot would do the trick again.
Had 3 shots over 3 months with no luck. Figured I went to
the well one too many times. Pain doc said age was working
against me. Any way, maybe it can be the silver bullet for you.
You might have to get an orthopedist to send you to a pain
management specialist. One thing I know, with all the crap
I've taken, gabapentin was the worst. Turned me into a lunatic
for the few days before I was able to wean myself off.
Hang in there brother.

I deleted the gorey photos from my previous post. Ugh.

Hi Bob, This past Monday I met with a pain doctor for an orientation. He reviewed my scans while I was there.. and showed me what was going on, which confirms the two different areas where I get pain. One is low (lumbar region) just above my tail-bone showing arthritis and spurring. The other is higher-up in the thoracic region where there are two discs that have collapsed and there is some spurring there as well.

The doctor recommends a "nerve-block" along with steroid-injections. His practice is in MA and an authorization must be obtained from my insurance company which is Blue Cross of RI. This can take one to two weeks. In the meantime I'm toughing it out. My wife thinks that I should have been prescribed pain-meds (opiate-based) by now.. seeing that this issue has persisted for the last 8 weeks. I could have asked for them I suppose.. but haven't.

Thanks for the support Bob.

Hi Peter, Those are encouraging words. I have an S-5 Jr. ready.... but besides putting the Tee Dee back together and getting it running; I'd need to rebuild the nose of the model with a narrower beam-spacing. That's not going to happen in 48 hours.. Laughing On a more positive note.. I had originally drilled the existing beams for mounting a Fox steel-fin .15 engine.. and have one that should be a runner.. and probably have a few propellers that would work well. I recently sourced adequate fuel to run the engine too. I actually have everything needed to get some Ringmaster flights in this weekend.. except for the confidence in myself. I readied six 1/2A models for flight this late Summer.. and haven't attempted to fly one of them. I'll admit; it's the closest I've gotten in years to actually flying again.. so there is hope.

Laughing I Love This Forum! Eric... loosing a post sucks.. doesn't it? I'm currently working on a post in MS word, (as Jacob-admin. recommends) because it will likely be lengthy. It's an Ace throttle experiment.. so stay tuned..

Your advice on the pain-meds mirrors my wife's. Maybe I deserve the pain.. like the bad-guy in the movie "Splash" who went to the dentist for a toothache and said; "I don't want any novocaine... just drill" Laughing

Tee Dee .09 rebuild.. and run! - Page 5 Empty the rebuild...

Post  roddie Thu Oct 12, 2017 7:42 pm

I decided to take a crack at putting the Tee Dee .09 back together tonight.. and all was going well until I went to fit the cylinder onto the case. I stopped there.. because I don't want to "F" this up..

Here's a sequence of photos I shot..

Tee Dee .09 rebuild.. and run! - Page 5 Dsc04915
Tee Dee .09 rebuild.. and run! - Page 5 Dsc04916

Tee Dee .09 rebuild.. and run! - Page 5 Dsc04921
Tee Dee .09 rebuild.. and run! - Page 5 Dsc04922

My issue is; the cylinder won't screw into the case. It's a tad too far rearward. The crank is as far forward as it can go. The rod is on the crankpin as far as it will go..

Huh...

Did I do something wrong? I was being very careful not to force or over-tighten anything. When reinstalling the crank; I installed the phenolic thrust-washer and using a 6-32 cap-screw; aligned the splines in the drive-plate and socked-it-down with a prop and flat-washer installed. I even installed the backplate, to see if it was binding against the crankpin.. but there's ample clearance there.

Any suggestions?

I figured it out.. (it was bugging the crap out of me..) I pulled the backplate and inverted the rod-position on the crankpin.. and voila! Is this normal... or do I have a bent rod?

Tee Dee .09 rebuild.. and run! - Page 5 Dsc04923

Anyway.. the engine feels good.. and I've proceeded to drill-out my bench-mount to accept 4-40 cap-screws and lock-nuts for a more "secure" bench-run.

Tomorrow will be the day. I installed Bob's (DCKRSN) Cox black 7" x 3.5" propeller and high-compression glow-head with one gasket with help from Ron's (Cribbs74) Cox .09 wrenches.. and will be running "Sig Champion 25" 1/2A glow-fuel.

Stay tuned for a report.. Thumbs Up I Love This Forum!

Roddie, I do not like the connecting rod being bent, there is a risk that something undesirable might happen and ruin the engine. Do you have a chance to straighten it out ... ... that works properly in your efforts?

Why is the aluminum portions of the engine still not shinny and polished up?

I don't know if the con-rod is bent Mauricio.. but something seems strange to me. I've never had a problem fitting a cylinder/piston to a crankcase before this one. I'd also never removed and replaced a crankshaft before. I thought I might have done something wrong in the re-installation of the crankshaft.. but I was careful. Why else would the rod fit on the crankpin one-way and not the other? I wouldn't know how to check for a bent-rod.. unless it was really obvious.

Maybe I shouldn't try running it without some closer inspection?
