Reed types! What do you use?

Reed types! What do you use?
Just wondering what type of reed everyone uses in there 049 and if you've experimented with the different ones. I've seen at least four or five types out there now so I'm curious if some perform better than others. I know a similar question was posted a while back but without much response so thought I'd try again. There must be some advantage to the different types or Cox would not have produced them.

I have some info on some of the reeds out there. I am currently gathering info on the woven Teflon reeds. I will also be posting info on how to make your own reeds out of floppy disks.

Re: Reed types! What do you use?
Thanks for the info. I have new Mylar, Teflon, woven Teflon and a stainless reed that I want to try swapping in to see if there is any performance differences. I suspect for the most part there isn't. Some reeds were probably made because they were cheaper to produce, others simply lasted longer. Seems its worth investigating anyway.

Re: Reed types! What do you use?
It's really the user's preference.
I personally REALLY like copper-beryllium, because they keep working forever (that's probably why you'll find em in
all the old engines). I've got some mylar in black widows. the stainless steel ones, well...their performance is about en
par with copper, but that's just me (really like your avatar, by the way!)

I like copper and steel mainly because they are easy to re straighten.

Now, the making of reeds from floppy disks is REALLY interesting! I have boxes of floppies that never get used these days, never realised it was possible, (though I always use sections of floppy as hinges for R/C models), hurry on the info!

Re: Reed types! What do you use?
I use the mylar reeds, like Paul Gibeault. Sometimes I make my own from floppy disc material.

Mark, that link was excellent. A lot of really great info. And thanks Paul for sharing all your knowledge and experience. For a guy like you who competes, it's almost like the coach giving the play book to the other team. So I really appreciate what you've put together and shared here.

Isn’t that great that we have pros willing to share!
It hsn’t always been that way but with sometimes surprising/amusing results. Back in the Dooling and Mc Coy tether car days the new .19 class started to gain popularity. A buddy and I went to a meet. He didn’t have a car so a friend offered an old tired Thimble Drome Arden .199 for him to enter. The fuel formula was the top secret at the time. Well as he didn’t have his own fuel he drained some from the ‘Panther Pi$$’ jug. (A waste disposal jug used for emptying tanks, dregs, etc. and who knows what else). Well his car won fist prize (a new McCoy 19 race car) but as far as I know he kept his fuel formula a top secret!
