Going thru the YouTube channel looking at O.S. Wankel engines and ran across this 80th Anniversary Wankel.
the current rate of what it cost to purchase it is close to $800.00 USD (as of Dec.17,2022)

Seems I remember OS doing a whole bunch of 80th Anniversary engines in "Gold" and "Platinum"

Back plate on the 80th Anniversary engines:

Glow plugs for the 80th Anniversary:

The Max-55FX-GP engine:

Last but not least --- the most expensive of all the 80th Anniversary Engines --- The Platinum Max-11AX engine:
OS/Graupner Wankel - It had to happen - Page 4 Max-1111

I have seen the prices on these engines twice the price of what they were originally purchased for.
I bet if you could find "one" of the 80th Anniversary Wankel engines it probably cost you a couple of thousands?

Bob,
I have found a website that you can get information on all of your parts for your Wankel engine.
It is Ripmax in England.

Click on the "Ripmax" word to go to the website:
Ripmax --- Wankel parts web page section

They have a photo of the odd screws that hold the fixed gear (low profile socket screws)
OS part number --- os41621000 (Screws for Gear holder)
OS/Graupner Wankel - It had to happen - Page 4 Os_par10

Still couldn't find any "new" wipers for the concentric cylinder (but there are new spring available)
And currently the US dollar to the British Pound isn't too bad?

Just watch out that you order the stuff for the 1st version and not the 2nd version.
And it will take a little work to get the parts you need.

I do the same thing to get Enya parts when Ken Enya doesn't have the parts I need.

You can get seal springs from Tower. Screws 41621000 are M2.6x5 SHCS, though M2.6 won't be found at your local hardware store. Again Tower has them. The odd screw is 41820001 which Tower also has as it's the rod cap screw for the smaller four stroke twin.

I would recommend rcjapan.net for Japanese engine parts. But, even they don't have apex seals in stock.  The apex seal part number is 41806007. It's extremely unlikely you'd find any stock for parts specific to this version anywhere. It's rare enough to find NOS cooling rings on Ebay. Quite often you see this version with a broken muffler mount (later versions as well). A friend had some NOS 1-49 parts, but I'm not sure what is usable after a fire. The PI version was introduced 40 years ago. This version was released in 1970.

Holy moly!! Someone was a very good boy this year..https://www.ebay.com/itm/125653014635

What are the odds that you'll get two or three good running OS Wankel's out of the six?  --- 50%

Click on "Wankel's up for bid" to see the closed auction of the "six"

Six Wankel's up for bid ---- Bidding is closed

Six used Wankel's for $450 --- who knows how good of a deal it was?
We might see all or some of them back on the net up for sale again, even at a higher price for each one?

Checked out the "bidder" and he has sold over 2500 items and he actually "made best offer" for the $450.00

So, yes, we'll see those engines for sale again at maybe $300 each and sold "as is".
Shipping for these engines is about $64.00

Given the exceptionally high cost of that engine at the time of production encourages me to take my humble, used, auction win OS Max .35-III R/C and era muffler, and further polish both to a mirror finish.

Don't do that!
Instead, take the engine apart and then paint the parts "black" and have it as a limited addition Black Knight engine.
And maybe if you could fine one of those 80th Anniversary backplates to screw on the back?

Thanks Mike and gka for the tips.  Just getting back after a few days off-line.

As I mentioned in another post I lost power for a few  days, but took the time to clean up Wankel #3.  Totally locked up with gobs of interrnal castor.  A Berrymans soak (in very cold weather) did wonders along with hot water and Remoil.

Bob, it appears that you scored good on this last one, clean combustion chamber, it looks like you may have a runner, congrats. Thumbs Up

Today, @Levent Suberk posted catalog pages on the rarest of the NSU Wankels yet:

I didn't realize that was a best offer. Years ago Ebay used to show the winning offer, but no longer. Now you have auctions with offers. So the offer could have been above the minimum bid, no way of knowing.

I have one special edition OS. I couldn't resist the FS-56 Racer Edition.

Anyone remember these? I had one NIB for a while. I should have kept it.

I checked Tower for screws, all Wankel screws are backordered.

My three.

Wankel #1.  As new, best of the three.  $485 BIN.

OS/Graupner Wankel - It had to happen - Page 4 W_110

Wankel #2.  Pretty well used.  Worst of the three. Worn apex seals, screws.  $200 BIN offered $175 and the seller agreed.

Wankel #3 W/box.  Spinner, Perry carburator.  $280. W/18 bids. Sharp seals.  Cleaned. Best compression.  Got an OS carburator coming for it.

Love that NSU Wankel "Flugmotor" pictured above.

First edition without the cooling ring presently on ebay.

Hey!
I know where that image is taken from!
It's from an "old" Hobby Lobby catalog that I also have.
Got a bunch of those old catalogs going back to 1977 until their last ones in the early 2000's.
When they got bought out and stopped publishing the catalogs.

I remember that engine in Hobby Lobby's catalog.
Thought the $1990.00 was way too much for any engine.
I was at the time purchasing Enya's and Webra engines from Penn. Valley Hobbies.

I did purchase the Kavan planetary gear starter with the battery box that the starter mounted to.
Purchased that back in 1993. I can get the replacement cones from Sig (still -- yet)
Have replaced the NiCad packs a few times over the years.

Interesting, with that brass mixture wheel, looks like it has a Perry carburetor sans the black anodized finish.

Seller just accepted my $30 offer for his $39 OS .30. I will transfer the carburator and the prop nut/washer over to the Wankel and the Perry will go on the OS.30 and everybody is happy.

I learn a new subject, thanks GallopingGhostler:

What does a partridge in a pear tree represent?

The partridge in a pear tree represents Jesus, the Son of God, whose birthday we celebrate on the first day of Christmas. Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge, a bird that will die to protect its young.

Thanks for replying and clarify, Levent. My comment wasn't intent to thwart the original meaning of the song, but rather as an indicator along the levels of secular mammon, that the particular non-Cox engine was one that was highly prized in CEF, otherwise the rarest of the Wankels, the top of the list. https://www.os-engines.co.jp/english/line_up/engine/air/wankel/manual/rotary49pi_2.pdf

Some of the highlights:

O.S.Engines Mfg. Co. wrote:

ABOUT THE ENGINE

The O.S. rotary combustion engine, based on NSU/Wankel System, was the world's first production model engine of the rotary-piston type as invented by Felix Wankel in 1957 and produced by NSU/Wankel in 1959.

This highly successful application of the NSU/Wankel System to a power unit of miniature proportions, has only been made possible by the expertise of O.S. research and development engineers and by the high levels of precision craftsmanship achieved in its tooling and manufacture.

Operating principle

In place of the piston and cylinder of a conventional reciprocating engine, the Wankel motor has a three-lobe rotor which moves in a circular path, while rotating about its own axis, within a housing having an epitrochoidal bore – i.e. a wide-waisted figure eight shape. Planetary rotation is controlled by an eccentric shaft, an internally-toothed gear and a fixed pinion mounted centrally on the rear cover plate.

The tips of the rotor are in continuous contact with the housing, forming three chambers, reach of which changes in volume, with rotation, to effect suction, compression, expansion and exhaust phases, as in a four-stroke reciprocating engine. Spring-loaded tip seals on the rotor prevent gases from passing from one chamber to the adjoining one and the rotor uncovers ports, as in a two-stroke engine, to control intake and exhaust timing.

Features

  • Almost total freedom from vibration
    Relatively low noise level
Pleasant sound specific to a rotary engine
  • Compact shape which enables easier installation in most models
  • Commercially available top-quality model engine fuel containing 18% oil, either synthetic or castor, can be used.

Note

Do not use commercially available low oil content fuel.

Since this is a rotary engine designed for model application, there are some notes to be followed in order to run it well for a long time. Also, handling of this engine is some-what different from that of two-stroke and four-stroke engines.

  1. Start the engine with an electric starter. Hand starting can be difficult due to the fuel mixture not having direct access to the glowplug, i.e. the glowplug does not extend into the combustion chamber and access is by means of a small hole in the housing.
  2. Starting is difficult when the atmospheric temperature is below 10 C [50 F]. In this case, warm the engine to approx. 20 C [68 F].
  3. Prime the engine fairly liberally with fuel and turn the propeller more than 3 turns so that all three chambers are primed. Start the engine in a short time (1~2 seconds). Prolonged application of an electric starter (more than 4 seconds) without engine firing will cause seizing between the side housing and the rotor due to insufficient lubrication. (Without firing, the fuel does not have sufficient lubricating as the oil in the fuel is diluted with methanol and additives.)
  4. Try to set the needle-valve with one trial. Setting on the ground lacks sufficient cooling, and the engine easily overheats.
  5. When the engine is enclosed in a cowl, be sure to make ventilation holes (outlet hole Should be larger than inlet hole.), or the engine will overheat, which results in poor engine running or possible seizing.
  6. Do not remove the carburetor intake tube, or the engine setting may vary, which results in poor running.

Bob, Peter Chinn goes into the technical aspects of OS manufacturing of the Wankel, compromises to build such in miniature, makes for a good informative read in this Jan. 1970 Radio Control Models and Electronics magazine article:

http://sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/OS-Graupner%20Wankel.html

I didn't know that on the original one, OS used Meehanite iron for the rotor, the same metal on many of the piston engine cross scavenge engines. This may explain the need for high content Castor oil fuel similarly used on the older iron piston steel sleeve engines. It also helps to explain the very rusty appearance of one of the rotors on one of your more rustic Wankels that mirrored the rusty piston on my K&B .35 Stallion exposed to water moisture.

My son found 3Xmm machine screws at True Value.  3 cents each.  Pan heads.  He got me an assortment.  20's are too short but work, 25's are too long but also work.  Used the 25's.  (Calls for 23's) Four of the pan heads interfere with the heat sink so I substituted the best of the original fillisters.

.30 OS arrives tomorrow useful for the OS carburator and prop driver/nut.  The apex springs arrive also

Looking good, Bob, the new screws cleaned up the Wankel's crankcase. Very Happy Looking forward to your engine run up report. You certainly put in a lot of effort to cleaning and restoring those. Except for the one with a severely damaged rotor housing, which I suspect won't have compression enough to run right, it would be good to hear the others roar to life once again. Thumbs Up

Hi Bob,

I am enjoying this thread,
And learning allot,
Thanks.

At the Model club meeting, when we first saw that Wankel...
No one figured that it would ever run.
How could it ?
It ran great, all that summer.
I remember, it needed an electric starter.
Also liked revving with a smaller prop, rather than lugging it down.
Very cool sound.
Without the muffler,
It was way quieter than any muffled 'piston' engines then.

I recall, the guy was an airline pilot. Got it in his travels.
It was more than 6 months later here,
When we got the latest model mags,
That, that Wankel was actually, 'real'...

Take care,
Have fun,
Dave

Thanks Dave, These Wankels are new to me also so we are learning together.

The 25mm's stand a little proud.  Thinking about chucking up four in a hand drill and working the heads down on a stone to clear the heat sink.

I haven't seen this mount before, factory mount is nicely cast in aluminum.  This one looks pressed and has a product stamp. Might be home-made.

Dorman?
